“Who?” Drake demanded, leaning forward.

I hid a smirk as Julie set her lips. If Julie thought that would appease Drake, she had another thing coming.

“Mac, need you in church,” Ace said into his phone.

Julie looked at him and blanched. Ace had his killer face on, and anyone would break with that aimed at you.

“What have you done?” Julie whispered, and I couldn’t help the flinch I felt.

All Julie’s emotion was there in her voice: fear, terror, horror, shame, and the urge to flee. For a moment, I doubted myself and then reminded myself that Gran was involved and, even right now, was babysitting Faelea. No matter what Julie said, I had to protect Gran. I stared at Mac as he entered, carrying a slim file. Mac tossed it to Drake, who looked through, and his eyebrows rose. Ace read over his shoulder before staring at Julie, who squirmed.

“That’s professional,” Drake murmured.

“I want to leave,” Julie hissed.

“And I want the truth. Who the fuck are you?” Drake demanded.

Julie’s lips locked together, and I realised she’d no intention of saying anything else.

“Faelea is on her way here. If you want help, we can help, but we need the truth,” I said.

Julie sent me such a look of betrayal my doubts kicked back in.

“When, apart from this one ride, did I ever ask you for help? Or to interfere in my life? Since the moment I moved into my house, all you did was badger me. Shit, I wanted to live alone, but no, for some reason, you felt you had every right to be nosey!” she hissed.

“When my family is involved, I have to make sure they are safe!” I retorted, and Julie snorted in disgust.

“Who forced their way into whose life? You’ve just ruined everything!” she yelled. Julie reached into her pocket and dragged her phone out, and began jabbing at buttons. Before I could react, Mac snatched it from her hand and stared at it in disbelief.

“Who are you calling?” Mac demanded.

“None of your business. You got to let me go. I have to get Faelea.”

“Who are you trying to call?” Mac bellowed, and Julie jumped.

“A friend!” she shrieked.

“Who?” Mac pushed.

“A woman named Simone,” Julie cried, cowering from Mac.

Her eyes were wide with fear, and I could see how she was accessing her chances of escape.

“And her partner’s called Butch?” Rock asked.

Julie blinked at Rock in disbelief.

“How would you know that?” she gasped. Julie flew out of her chair and pressed her back to the wall.

“You’re under the Juno Group’s protection?” Drake demanded, swapping a glance with Ace.

“How do you know them? Are you working for Jax and Arlo?”

“No, they’re not,” a guy announced as the door opened and he entered the room. Instantly she shoved behind him as Angel stood with legs splayed and his arms crossed.

“Julie’s one of yours?” Drake asked, not moving.

“She’s under the protection of the Juno Group. We got an alert that she’d been tracked and was moving when somehow Julie ended up here,” Angel said as Julie clung to his tee.
