Phoe

My heart sank when I answered the phone. Harley was speaking fast, which meant something was wrong.

“Mom, we’ve been hit!” Harley cried. Shouting and noises exploded behind him… and then gunshots. What the fuck was happening? Panic welled as I heard a pained shout, and I almost lost my head.

“Harley!” I screamed.

“We’re under attack, Mom! Get the brothers!” Harley yelled, and a gun went off close to the phone. Shit, I was already running through the garden—a place I’d been walking and admiring the flowers only a few moments ago.

“Who’s hitting you?”

“Fuckin’ Venomous Fangs, at least twenty of them!” Harley roared.

“Get cover!” I screamed as the Hall appeared.

“We’re doing the best we can. Gauntlet is down, and Calamity’s been shot. Fuckers came out of nowhere!” Harley shouted.

This should not be happening. The Rage prospects, alongside Micah, now called Fanatic, and the Hellfire prospects had planned a campout where they could talk shit and bond. Drake and Chance were completely focused on Hellfire and Rage bonding tightly, and the prospects were a great way to do that. They’d talk shit about the brothers and the crappy jobs they did and make strong ties.

“Are you at the campsite?” I demanded as I blew through the back door.

“Yeah, we’re holding our own but pinned down,” Harley roared. “Get help, Mom. Gotta go.”

“Harley? Harley!” I yelled. Fuck, my boy didn’t answer.

“Drake!” my scream echoed throughout the house. Frantic, I raced to his study and met Drake as he came out.

“The prospects were attacked; some have been hit. We need to go now!” I gasped, skidding to a halt in front of him. “Harley called it in. He got a look at their cuts… Venomous Fangs just made their first move!”

Drake disappeared inside his study and returned moments later. In silence, he handed me two guns and several clips. I nodded silently as I stuck them in my waistband. The building dread didn’t ease even though Drake now shared in it.

He grabbed my hand and raced for his bike. I picked up my helmet on the way. I was glad Drake wasn’t prepared to argue about me going with him. Drake knew as I did, our sons were there, and there’d be no stopping me from coming.

As we passed a security guard, Drake ordered Reading Hall to be put on lockdown. I nodded an agreement and saw him jump on his phone to, no doubt, call Liz. As we sped away, heading towards the campground where the prospects, including four of my children, were, my heart thumped against my chest. Please, God, let us get there in time.

Chapter One.

Phoe

I didn’t give Drake directions. He already knew. Drake had punched in the SOS to Ace and Axel, and they’d be alerting the rest of the MC. Who the fuck knows? Had any of the other prospects managed to reach different brothers? Harley had called me and not Drake, probably because I was the first number in his phone book.

As we neared the campground, we heard shots in the distance.

I took out both weapons and checked their clips without a word from Drake. I was so comfortable being on a bike I didn’t need to hold him anymore. Sometimes I would wrap around him just to feel his body against mine, but now wasn’t the time. As soon as I’d done so, I tapped Drake, and he nodded. We were so in sync, it was uncanny.

We turned the corner, and I saw my target. I raised both arms and started firing. The first guy fell, instantly shot, and the second turned to me and began shooting back. Drake started evasive manoeuvres, and I aimed and fired, and the next target took a headshot.

In the distance, I heard a roar of bikes, and I knew Rage was coming. Whether as a group or singly, I didn’t know, but that was the sound of multiple motorbikes approaching. There were shouts from in front of us, and a bike revved up, and then someone headed towards Drake. Drake patted my leg, and I fired over his shoulder. There was a loud clank, but the guy I was shooting at collapsed.

There were loud shots, yells, and bikes revving from where the campground was situated. Drake pulled over, and we got off the bike and took cover. A stream of bikes came straight for us—all shooting. As we found shelter, a motorbike appeared from the direction we came from, and the passenger pumped a shotgun. The booms scattered the fleeing riders, and several went down. Trapped between the prospects firing from behind, Drake and I firing from the side, and what looked like Ace and Artemis, the bikers drove into the trees.

We did not bother following. I was on my feet before everyone and racing towards the campground.

“Phoe!” Drake bellowed, but I didn’t pay any attention. My kids were there. That’s all I needed to know. Drake’s bike started, and I saw Ace disappear into the treeline with Artemis still firing the shotgun. Drake beat me to where the prospects were camping by mere seconds, but I was on my knees by the first downed prospect.
