“Huh? What?”

“That we finally found out who’s behind all the sabotage,” I said. “That’s great, isn’t it?”

“Yes,” she said. “Of course, it is.” She shook her head, confused and unsure. “I mean. It’s great that we found out who put the rat in the soup, but... to tell you the truth, I’m a little preoccupied with what happened at the dance studio.” She looked at the dean. “No offence, but I think that a rodent in a pot doesn’t quite compare to a blaze that has left a lovely young student disfigured.”

The dean quickly lost his triumphant grin and looked solemnly at Brook. “You’re absolutely right, Miss Brook. It was far from my intention to imply that everything was settled. Like I said, while we do believe that the Hunters were involved, we’re looking into making a solid case against them.”

She nodded her understanding.

He stood and looked at all of us. “Well, now, if you’ll excuse me, I do have other matters to tend to.”

“Thank you for stopping by,” I said as I stood up. “I’ll see you to the door.”

The dean nodded his salutations. “Gentlemen... Miss Brook.”

“Thank you for taking our allegations seriously,” I said when we reached the door. “We feared that you might think we were simply being petty and vengeful, but...”

“You did the right thing coming to see me,” the dean said. “To be honest, I’ve had my reservations about those boys for quite a while now. Your tips and allegations simply pushed me to listen to my own suspicions.”

“Thank you again.”

With a final nod he headed out and I closed the door behind him.

Finally, a chapter in this fiasco was closed.

Chapter 8

“I can’t believe we did it,” Bishop said as he raised his glass of sipping tequila.

Cradling his tumbler of whiskey in his hand, Deacon said, “Told you we’d get the Hunters kicked off this campus.”

“I never doubted it for a minute,” I said as I nursed my bourbon. “I’m just surprised how quickly it all went down. I was sure this thing would drag on for months.”

Bishop raised his glass higher. “Important thing is that we did it.”
