Returning to him, I felt the slide of silk over my heated flesh. The way he watched me made the desire inside me burn hotter ... just like it had earlier when I’d seen him in the audience.

“I’m not going to dance anymore at the club,” I said, having just decided.

I was going to take a risk, show him that he was the man I wanted. To win, you took a chance to lose, and with him, that risk was totally worth it.

“Babe.” He put his hands on my hips. Bringing me between his spread legs, he gazed up at me through his spiky dark blond lashes. “You don’t have to do that.”

“I do.” I covered his mouth with my fingertips, experiencing another pleasurable shiver as his warm breath ghosted my skin. “But let me clarify.” I lifted my hand. “I’m not going to dance in front of an audience anymore. I’ll choreograph at the club. I’ll headline until I can train a replacement. And I’ll dance when the other girls rehearse, to get my fix.”

“Thank you.” He took my hand and pressed potent kisses to the pad of my thumb and each finger. “That means a lot to me.”

“It means everything to me the words we’ve exchanged.” I melted. “I don’t take them lightly. Your offer for me to stay here, either. I want to build a future with you.”

I wanted this to last. Remembering Ally’s advice, I put myself out there.

“I’ve never shared those words with any man.”

His eyes flared. “I never shared them with any woman.”

“I’m scared,” I said, revealing more. “I’m afraid you might be disappointed.”

“That’s not possible,” he said firmly.

“It is.” I gnawed on my lip. “It’s not like there’s a switch inside me that I can throw that will take away any doubts.”

“I understand.” His deep voice rumbled.

“I’m not sure you do, exactly.” Glancing away to frame my thoughts, I frowned. “I’m not all sorted out.”

“Neither am I,” he said. “My old man really screwed me up. And now I have a daughter. I want to get right what he did wrong.”

“You will.” I nodded. I totally believed in Champion.

“I hope so,” he mumbled.

“I’ll help you,” I said.

“I’m counting on it.” His blue eyes were burning orbs. “And I’ll help you overcome your doubts.”

“I have nightmares. Flashbacks,” I blurted since we were making confessions. “And sometimes I get sad for no reason, right out of nowhere.”

His expression softened. “Baby—”

“I’m better now because of you.” I cut him off, though I craved his empathy. “But I already care about you so much, need you so much, that I’m afraid too. Afraid to overwhelm you and scare you away.”

I brought my gaze back to his and gave him the biggest confession of all.

“I’m afraid to lose you like I lost them.”

“I understand that.” He squeezed my fingers. “And I’m afraid too.

“Are you?” I tilted my head. He was the confident and world-famous quarterback of the Texas Lonestars. He struck fear into the hearts of defensive players throughout the league. “What are you afraid of?”

“I’m afraid to fuck this up because I care about and need you so much.” His dark blond brows plunging together, a determined crease appeared. “But I’m more afraid not to try. The way you make me feel is incredible. You’re incredible.” He gathered my hands. “I would do anything, risk anything, to keep you.”

“Oh, Champion.” I sighed.

“Electra.” His chiseled lips curved. “My Electra.”
