“What you do inside is totally up to you.” She used her key to unlock the door and pushed it open.

Warily, I entered. I’d never been inside one of the private rooms. It was as swanky as a Vegas hotel room. Not that I had ever been to Vegas, but I’d seen photos.

The carpet was dark purple with cream swirls. A king-size bed with a coverlet in dark purple and beige sheets dwarfed the space, but the man who rose from a black leather wingback chair beside it eclipsed everything.

“Champion.” I gasped and backed away from him, gulping as I heard the door to the room clicking closed behind me.

“Don’t you dare run from me.”

Looking gorgeous and angry, Champion crossed the room quickly, using his legendary speed that the scouts had overlooked when assessing him for the pros. Their mistake caused him to fall to the sixth round in the draft.

“Did you ask for me?” I jumped in surprise when he caged me in, slamming his palms to the wood on either side of me.

“Zack did.” Champion stared down at me, his blue gaze drifting over my features. “He talked me into coming to Fantasy tonight because he thought their headliner would help me get over the girl who ran away from me in Saint Croix.”

“I didn’t run away from you.” Champion’s explanation gave me what I needed to put the missing piece in the puzzle. But knowing how he’d ended up here didn’t lessen the effect he had on me.

“Call it whatever you want.” He arched a brow, oblivious to how light-headed he made me. “But the fact is you took off after agreeing to spend the day with me.”

“It was just a hookup.” I swallowed hard. My throat was dry, and my heart was racing. “I don’t owe you any explanation.”

“I disagree.”

“You would,” I grumbled. He’d been argumentative since the beginning.

“Be brave, Electra.” His wonderful deep voice turned cajoling. “Talk to me.”

I cranked up my chin, though my knees wobbled. “I’m no coward.”

“I know you’re not, baby,” he said huskily and dropped his arms.

Without the cage of his arms, I was cold. A shiver rolled through me as he swept his gaze over me.

“Man, I missed you,” he said low.

I missed him too, but I held my tongue. I couldn’t admit that.

“You were more talkative on the island.” His dark blond brows crashed together.

“I don’t have anything more to say.”

“Well, I do.” He pointed at the chair he had abandoned. “Sit,” he said, his jaw so tight, his muscle ticked.

“Okay.” I scurried across the room. I hadn’t seen Champion angry on Saint Croix, but I had on television. During the Philadelphia versus Texas game, he’d been furious when a late hit sent Zack off the field on a stretcher.

“Where is Zack?” I asked after dropping onto the firm cushion.

“He’s gone home.” Champion frowned. “Why do you want to know?”

“No particular reason,” I said. “I just wondered since I was expecting him to be here, not you.”

“Don’t want you meeting Zack in a room with a bed.” Champion’s eyes flashed like blue lightning.

“Does he know about me and you?” I asked. “I mean, that I’m the woman you were with on the island?”

“He knows now.” His expression hardened. “There’ll be no lap dances with him or anyone else.”

“Okay.”
