“Fuck,” he said hoarsely. “Fuck me and then forgive me, cariad.”

Delirium was making me high and desire making me stupid. A low whine burst from my throat at his words. At his desperation. His hands slid over me, touching my throat, my ribs, my stomach, my thighs.

Never over the places that needed touched the most.

He was holding back.

I didn’t want him to hold back, I wanted it all.

“Yes,” I breathed, delirious from his kisses. Feathery down my neck and bare shoulder. He paused, pressing his forehead to my neck. Hot breath spilling over my breasts.

“Goddamn it,” he swore softly. “No, no, I’m sorry.”

“Merrick—”

“I can’t do this, cariad,” he said, his voice strained. “I shouldn’t be here. I should never have come here tonight, I knew what I was going to do. This isn’t how we are…we’re not like this.”

“Why?” I breathed.

He raised his head, running a hand through his hair. He was drunk on me, disheveled from my touch. Another button had popped open and I could see the dark hairs on his chest.

My core pulsed.

“I’m old enough to be your father,” he said grimly. “I’m your guardian.”

“It doesn’t matter,” I said. “Merrick, I want this.”

He shook his head once, his eyes clouding. What we’d done was hitting us both hard. Filling the room with cold awkwardness.

The Welsh King had kissed me.

And that single touch had destroyed any hope of a platonic relationship. Even now, just looking at him, my body was on fire. The places where his hands had been felt raw and empty.

The places he’d been would never been the same again.

He took a step back. “I have to go.”

“Why?”

“Because if I stay any longer, I’ll stay the night.”

Stay the night, please, stay the night.

A million images flashed through my brain. Merrick in my bed, naked and warm. His bare chest, speckled with hair, against my back. His hands on me, his mouth breaking me into a million pieces.

Making me feel things I never thought I would.

Desperate, I crossed the kitchen and gripped the front of his shirt. Pulling him down until I could stand on my toes to reach him. Our mouths drew together like magnets.

Our kiss was more intense this time, more focused. Building on itself. Our mouths moved together in perfect tandem. Kissing, licking, biting, sucking. Tongues brushing in bursts of sweetness and heat.

I pulled back just enough to speak.

“Please, stay the night, Merrick.”

His jaw worked. “If I stay, I’ll take everything.”

“Then take it.”
