He ran a hand over his jaw, his fingers scratching on his dark stubble. I took a step back as he turned, unfurling his six-foot-five body over me. He smelled less like cologne tonight and more like…Merrick.

If someone could bottle that smell and sell it, they’d make millions.

“I wasn’t embarrassed,” he said.

His voice was hoarse and low. A rumble in his throat.

“You said—”

“I know what I said,” he blurted. “I know…I know that’s what I should have felt. But I was…jealous more than anything.”

I gaped at him. “Why?”

“Because they all saw you like that.” His eyes dropped, falling over me quickly. My heart pounded. “Because you are my ward, the Welsh Princess, and no one deserves to see you like that.”

It wasn’t what he wanted to say, I felt it in the tremor of his voice. I swallowed, heat pulsing deep inside me. Every rational part of my brain begged me to hold back, not to touch him.

But the little rebellious bit of me, the part between my thighs, had taken control.

I reached out. He started when my palm touched his chest, inhaling sharply. His skin was scorching hot. His heart hammered under the thin cloth.

The world spun.

What was happening to us?

“Cariad,” he whispered.

“Merrick.”

The watch skittered from the counter and fell to the ground. His hand was on me, on the back of my neck. All rough and lean and strong.

His other hand slid down my spine and gripped me through my shirt. Fingernails dragging up the cloth. His palm searing my naked lower back.

Everything was happening too fast. Like a blurry movie. His body pinned me against the counter and I felt his erection for a breathless second.

Hard at his hip, pushing into my lower belly.

But it was nothing compared to the searing, euphoric heat of his mouth coming down on mine.

For a second, there was nothing. Just space and darkness.

Then my brain exploded. Every strand of DNA erupted like fireworks. Gold and silver bursts in a cold, endless galaxy. A shower of meteorites across a universe made for only us.

This was chemistry. This was rare, like a once in a lifetime eclipse. Written into the beginning of the world for this moment in time—this indescribable moment when Merrick Llwyd kissed me.

Every part of my body and mind unwound itself to nothingness so the Welsh King could write himself into my cells, into my neurons, into the breath from my lungs.

We spun on and on like this, his mouth hot and firm on mine. Kissing me with aching slowness. Like he wanted to spend the rest of his life locked in my arms with our breath mingling and fireworks burning somewhere far away.

Limp, I let my lips part. And his tongue swiped against mine.

Desire woke, hot and wild. Filling my core and tightening it like a coil of pure heat.

This was the lust that made people do stupid things and fuck up their entire lives over a single person.

I knew because I was right there, ready to lose it all tonight.

He pulled back for the barest second to kiss my neck. His mouth burned like a brand.
