I leaned back in my chair and she curled up in my lap. Her wine balanced in her slender fingers, draped with the jewelry I’d put there. My eyes slid lower and I set aside my glass and ran my palm up her inner thigh.

Beneath her silk robe, she was naked. I licked my fingers and eased them between her legs. Her eyes flicked up to mine, her pupils already blown and her cheeks stained with pink.

My fingers found the gold and diamond between her thighs and I stroked over it. Playing with it so gently it made her body arc and her hips began moving in my lap.

“My Welsh Princess,” I murmured, kissing the side of her neck.

She set aside her wine and her soft palm skimmed up my chest, down my bicep, and rested above my wrist. I’d covered up that tattoo a few months after our wedding. There was no trace of it, the words concealed by a black ink Welsh dragon.

“I’ve been thinking,” I mused. “It might be time for you to get off birth control and I’ll go in and do my part.”

She sobered. “Are you still sure you don’t want children?”

I nodded. “How do you honestly feel?”

Her fingers moved back up my forearm and wove through my hair. Brushing it back.

“I’m positive,” she said firmly.

She kissed me and the warmth sank to the core of my being. When I drew back, her eyes were hazy with contentment.

“Alright, I’ll make an appointment,” I said. “Speaking of children, I saw Caden this morning before he went out to Wyoming. He’s so fucking eager to get out there, the last two years have been killing him.”

“Did he end up having to have someone shadow him?” she asked, clearly not very interested. She tried to keep out of organization business.

I nodded. “It was part of the deal. We only got the money if they could send one of their agents in to supervise him.”

“Well, hopefully he won’t cause a problem.”

“It’s a woman,” I said.

Clara’s brows rose. “Caden is very good at a lot of things, but he’s not good at keeping it in his pants. You’ll want to keep a close eye on what he’s doing out there.”

“Believe me, I gave him a fucking lecture,” said Merrick. “I’m hoping how hard it was for him to secure this funding will make him think twice before he sticks his dick into the enemy.”

“The enemy?”

I worked my jaw, not wanting to give too many details. “It’s more of an enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend situation. But let’s not think about it anymore tonight, darling. Caden will pull it off, I believe in him. And all you need to do is be happy and let me handle the rest.”

She snuggled closer to me, laying her head on my collarbone. “I know Caden doesn’t tell you this, but you’re a really good father. You’re doing a great job with a shitty situation.”

My chest ached. I didn’t get told that and…well, I needed to hear it sometimes. It was hard to learn how to be a father to an adult child. It was even harder because I would always carry around the guilt of being unknowingly absent.

Tonight wasn’t about the scars we carried. Tonight was for rest, for peace. Tomorrow there would be the usual responsibilities, the usual struggles. But at the end of the day, I got to come home to Clara.

That was the deepest kind of happiness I’d ever known.

THE END
