“It’s just…I wish this was just about us,” I whispered. “I’ve barely been able to choose anything for my wedding. All the colors, the location, the vows—it all has to be done by the book. I just want you, Merrick, I don’t want this huge wedding. It’s just…too much for me.”

“I know,” he said, kissing my forehead. “I wish I could change that, but I can’t.”

I took a deep breath, knowing he felt horrible about it. “It’s fine, I can make it through to the honeymoon.”

His lids flickered and his hands slid up my waist, his palm grazing my breast for a second. A quick tingle shot down my spine.

“God, I can’t wait,” he murmured.

We had dinner and I went upstairs to get ready for bed. He stayed in his office to finish his work for a few hours and I watched a movie on my tablet. It was almost midnight when he finally came up to bed and began undressing in the bathroom.

I popped my retainer in and put my tablet away, snuggling up under the blankets.

He heard me stir and appeared in the bathroom door, toothbrush in hand. He was shirtless, his sweatpants hanging deliciously off his hips.

“Do you want to fuck before bed?” he asked.

I smiled sleepily. “You’re so romantic now that you have me nailed down.”

He laughed. “So that’s a no?”

“No, let’s have a quickie,” I said, stretching out on my back. “But I’m too tired to come, you can take care of that tomorrow night.”

He turned to go back in the bathroom and paused. There was a moment of silence and then he pivoted slowly and leaned in the doorway. His face was contemplative, his jaw working slightly.

“Listen, cariad, I can’t get you out of the wedding. It’s the event of the season. But…what if you and I eloped and got officially married before that?”

Wait…really? I pushed myself up and popped my retainer out so I could talk properly.

“You would do that for me?” I whispered.

“I’d do anything for you,” he said. “Let’s run away together, get married in a courthouse somewhere in secret. Spend a few days fucking each other senseless. No one will ever know.”

“Where?”

“Anywhere you want.”

“When?”

He ran a hand over his face, slicking his hair back.

“Well, tomorrow is Thursday,” he said. “Let’s leave after I get off work.”

My whole body went still, my heart thumping like a drum.

“What…what?”

He shrugged. “Let’s run away and get married, Clara. We’ll leave tomorrow night and we can get married Friday morning and honeymoon until Sunday night.”

I just sat there and stared at him, completely taken aback.

“You want to marry me this Friday?”

“I would marry you last Friday if I’d thought of it then.”

He looked so pleased with himself that I couldn’t keep back my laughter. My ears roared as I searched for the right words to describe what I was feeling. Euphoria? Relief? Breathless anticipation?

He crossed the room, laying aside his toothbrush, and climbed atop me. I let my body slide back until I was fully on my back, my palms curled on either side of my head.
