Before Osian left, he had a private meeting with Merrick. They talked for a long time and he left seething. I tried to get Merrick to recount the conversation, but he refused.

It was organization business, he said.

That was code for it’s-about-you-but-I-don’t-want-to-talk-about-it. I wasn’t stupid, it was clearly about my engagement. Merrick was refusing to accept the second piece of jewelry and Osian was trying to use his father’s money to threaten him.

But Merrick didn’t threaten easily. He told me later that the necklace was singularly unimpressive. Merrick gave it back and told him to return when he had better taste.

Osian left for Europe with his tail tucked between his legs.

“Picking out a set of jewelry isn’t rocket science,” Merrick said that night, wrathfully typing on his computer in bed. “You’d think I’d asked him to bring you the moon.”

“What would you buy me?” I asked. “If it was you.”

“Something better.”

I spent Valentine’s Day alone only to have him come home at the end of the day with a bag, and a round, paper box. He was fully dressed in a suit and tie, looking so good I wanted to rip his clothes off.

I was already in his bed, makeup off and hair tied up. Retainer in.

“I’m taking you out,” he said, spilling the boxes onto my lap. “We leave in an hour.”

“Where—where are we going?”

“Never you mind,” he said. “Just pack an overnight bag with clothes for warm weather.”

“It’s forty degrees outside,” I said.

“Trust me, cariad.”

He was in a good mood, I heard it in the spring in his step as he disappeared into the bathroom. I packed my overnight bag, but I loitered, shy about opening the gifts until he returned.

He appeared in the doorway, crossing his arms.

“Go on then,” he said.

A thrill went through me as I popped the top of the box. Inside was the most beautiful bouquet of pink and black roses. It was his staple and it never failed to make my heart do a little flip.

“They’re beautiful,” I said, smiling.

“I’ll have the housekeeper cut them,” he said. “Now open the other one because we need to get going.”

I untied the bag and pulled out a tissue wrapped bundle. It unrolled in my hands and the softest, red lace panties and bra tumbled onto the bed.

Lava pooled down my spine, bubbling in my core, spreading down my legs. He had bought me lingerie. No one had ever bought me lingerie before and I hadn’t realized how much of a turn-on it would be.

My heart was going so fast. I lifted the garments, my face heating.

“They’re beautiful,” I whispered.

He moved closer, taking my chin and tilting it up. His eyes skimmed my face and a slow grin broke over his face. He was so fucking pleased with himself.

“Oh, that’s good to know.”

“What?”

Instead of speaking, he slipped his hand under my sweatshirt and into my panties. His ring and pointer fingers parted my folds gently and his middle finger dipped into my drenched pussy. My lower back arched.

He kissed my forehead. “If getting romanced makes you this wet every time, it’s nothing less than princess treatment from here on out.”
