Mason
“You look amazing,” I said.
Laney stared up at me with those beautiful eyes of hers and smiled. Then she leaned back in my arms and wrapped her hands more fully around the back of my neck. Her face lit up perfectly. I loved the way she looked when she was happy. I loved to make her happy. And she would never know how happy she’d made me. Every time she looked at me or smiled at me, my whole world just got so much brighter.
“Thank you,” she replied. “You look pretty damn amazing yourself. I’m about to claw blondie’s eyes out over here if she doesn’t stop staring at you.”
I glanced towards the right where she had tilted her head to gesture. I saw the woman in question, and she was definitely checking me out. Way to be crazy obvious. I looked back at Laney and rolled my eyes. “Well, I’d pay good money to see that. Cat fights are very popular nowadays. I think since the internet and since everyone has a camera in their pocket, things like that have become huge internet sensations. I think you could take her.”
Laney laughed and shook her head. “Not tonight. I’m trying to be all civilized. It’s a different world for me.”
I glanced around at the stuffy, yet romantic environment we were in. Yes, it was that type of crowd. I had decided to take Laney out for a proper, fun date this evening. It was a Friday. I’d just dropped Jack off for his weekend with Tiffany and then I had driven straight to pick up Laney for a romantic evening. I was worried that she was spiraling farther down a rabbit hole of drugs and who knew what else. She didn’t look good. How she managed to keep her job with the police department was beyond me.
