“Why?”

“Why what, baby?”

“Why me? Why now? Why is this happening?”

“Because you make me better, Jessa.”

“I made you too good,” she teased and ran a finger down the center of my face, over the bridge of my nose, lingering on my lips before she continued. “Come back when you can, alright?”

She slid off my lap and stood, searching the floor for my clothes, then placed my things on the edge of the bed and pulled on a pair of pajamas.

I dressed and wondered if this was it. If we were over before we’d really started. I hadn’t yet asked her to be mine. Instead, I had launched straight into telling her how I felt. How I had felt for a while.

I’d fallen hard and fast for Jessa Cole.

And she was walking me to the door.

I pulled on my shoes and stood there, looking down at the only woman I wanted, and the one woman I might not be able to have.

“Make it count, okay?” she whispered and reached for me.

We kissed, and I gave it my all. Whether she was talking about the NHL or this kiss, I chose both.

“I love you,” I whispered as we parted, and I walked away before she could respond.

CHAPTER25

JESSA

“I need more chips.”I held the empty bowl toward Andrew, shaking it.

“You ate all the big ones…and left all the small pieces.”

“So?” I grumbled, glaring at the TV that was nearly the size of the entire wall. “More chips, please.”

He laughed and took the bowl from me, heading over to the bar. Stepping behind it, Dad poured the small chips from my bowl into his and added new barbecue chips to my bowl.

I grinned at him, and he just shook his head, returning to the couch with my bowl and a new wine cooler that he’d bought for Diane, but she never drank them.

“You’re lucky I love ya, kiddo.”

I stuffed a chip in my mouth and chewed. “Zach told me he loved me.”

Dad snorted into his beer, making it foam. “What?”

“Yep.” I took a sip of the peach wine cooler. “And I’ll probably never see him again.”

“You will, kiddo.”

Dad reached over and patted my leg. He was still getting acquainted with the wholecomfortingthing. His hugs were top tier, but his dad advice…needed work.

“This is his first NHL game. You should be up there.”

“Can’t. I’ve got work.” I peered over at him, and he could see right through my weak excuse.

I didn’t want him to fail. I wanted him to succeed, but if hislucky charmwent to the game…I would have had to watch him live his dream, while I became a memory.

He needed to celebrate with his team, not with…me. The girl he’d slept with. That was all I really was.
