I had forgotten I was on the phone with him.

“I had no idea. When did he have the time?”

“Right after you two kissed in front of your old man, it looks like.”

“You gonna let that one go, or…” I teased, and Andrew laughed.

“Consider it forgotten. I guess we’ll find out on Tuesday, maybe, if we can stay afloat or not.”

Tuesday came and went with no update from the Hammerheads Foundation.

It did, however, bring an influx of new applicants to the program. I had spent all of Tuesday and the better part of Wednesday processing applications, accepting equipment donations, and answering the phone every fifteen minutes.

“Power Play, Jessa speaking.”

“Jessa, Carl Strickland.”

“Oh, hi,” I perked up and searched my desk for my notebook, then for a dang pen. “How are you?”

“I’m fantastic, actually. The pre-season game was a hit. Really great game, and all for a fantastic cause. I’ve learned so much about the program that I’m happy to announce the Foundation would like Power Play to come on as a permanent, frequent partner.”

“That’s amazing!” I muted my phone for a second, then hollered, “DAD!”

I could hear him knock something over on his desk.

“Truly great ’cause you’re involved with it, Jessa. I wish I’d known about it sooner so we could have helped you sooner.”

Andrew entered my office with wild eyes, glancing around to see if I was hurt. I put the phone on speaker while Carl was going over how they had divided the ticket sales for our donation.

“With that all said and done, ten dollars per ticket, plus additional generous donations, I’m happy to say that we have raised $116,500 for Power Play.”

“What?” I said as Andrew whooped loudly.

“That’s right,” Carl chuckled. “One hundred sixteen thousand, five hundred dollars. Are you free next week for a check presentation?”

“Absolutely,” Andrew replied, rounding my desk to pull me into a side hug. “No matter the day or time, we’ll be there.”

“Sounds great. How about next Wednesday at two p.m.?”

“We’ll be there,” Andrew announced. “Thanks, Strickland. You have no idea how much this means to us.”

“I’ve got an idea. Have a great day, guys. We’ll see you next Wednesday.”

Dad reached past me to hang up the phone and hugged me fully. “You did it, kiddo.”

“I didn’t do anything.”

It was all Zach.

“Sure, you did. Now why don’t you call that hockey boy-toy of yours and let him know what was raised?” With a kiss against my forehead, Dad stepped back and peered down at me. “Proud of you, kiddo.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

“I’m calling Diane. She’s going to be thrilled.”

“Tell her I say hi,” I called as he crossed the room.
