“Hey,” he called.

“Hey.”

He stood completely still, looking like he was at war with himself, and he crossed the hallway to stand in front of me, so close the tips of our shoes touched.

“Those bars were good.”

“Thanks,” I said slowly, staring up at him. He was taller than Zach, and it hurt my neck to look that damn high. “You played well today.”

Rookford scoffed. “All eyes were on your wonder boy. No one gave a shit about me.”

I shrugged. “I saw how that Falcon egged you on.”

He glared at me. I was being polite, and he was glaring.

“Stop being nice to me. It’s not worth it.”

“Noted,” I replied, exhaling as he took a step back.

“Stare much?” Zach called from behind Rookford.

“Are you both coming?” Rookford demanded, turning fully to face Zach, still blocking him from my view.

“Nope,” Zach replied, and I could hear the grin in his voice.

Rookford tossed a glance over his shoulder at me. “Whatever.”

He finally stepped aside, giving me a full view of the hottest hockey player I had ever seen in my entire life. Zach wore a navy suit that was obviously sewn onto his body, paired with a white shirt below. The top two buttons were undone, but his suit was buttoned.

Zach tucked his hands in his pockets and moved towards me, wearing deep brown dress shoes. “Are you checking me out, lucky?”

“Yep,” I replied. There was no point in lying.

“Come on,” he coaxed and held his arm out.

I moved toward him and tucked myself along his side.

Zach guided us to his car, opened the passenger door for me, and got behind the wheel wearing the biggest grin possible. It wasn’t just because I was taking him to my apartment to sleep with him. He had missed me just as much as I had missed him.

We had collided together in a way that was hard to forget, and our lives had been twisted together from that moment on.

I directed Zach to my apartment, and he parked behind my car, reaching into the backseat for a bag.

“You knew I’d ask you to stay?”

He shook his head. “No…but I hoped you would, so I came prepared for anything.”

“I hope you mean that,” I teased as he got out of the car.

Zach opened my door and helped me out, and he followed me inside.

We moved through the dark apartment hand-in-hand, both of us warm with excitement and anticipation. It was enough to overpower the nervous energy pulsing through me.

Turning on the light in my room, I pressed the door closed and locked it, even though Ali wasn’t coming home tonight.

Zach stood by my bed, his bag abandoned on the floor. He unbuttoned his suit jacket. “Having a hard time not pouncing on you.”

“Then we should fix that.”
