“Help…you,” I finally managed to stutter out.

“Help me?” She uncrossed her legs, sending blood exactly where it wasn’t supposed to be right now. “And how do you plan to help me?”

I swallowed my words as Jessa stood and smoothed the dress down from her stomach. Carried by white tennis shoes, Jessa strode toward me. I watched every movement greedily, turning until my ass was against her desk and she was in front of me.

“Hmm?” she prompted. “How do you plan to helpme, Zach?”

“Be careful,” I warned.

“Why would I need to be careful?”

“I always finish what I’ve started, Jessa. And if you startthis…” I motioned between the two of us. “I intend to finish it.”

“Should I be scared?” she whispered, her tone tinged with fear already.

She wasn’t asking if sheshouldbe scared. She was letting me know that shewas.

“Not at all.”

We watched one another in a stifling hot room that was only becoming hotter the longer we stared. The temperature wasn’t the only thing that made my skin warm. The way Jessa’s gaze would glaze over my arms, across my stomach, up to my shoulders, throat, and chin, and then linger on my lips.

I wanted to kiss her. I had wanted to kiss her two days ago when I left her stunned in a café. I’d wanted to kiss her when she stood in my kitchen, mad but intrigued.

I was intrigued too. By everything she did.

The phone rang behind me. I turned my head to peer at it, and it was blinking red.

“You’re getting a call.”

Jessa groaned. “It’s just Joann. She’ll call back.”

The ringing stopped, and barely a second later, it started again.

I laughed softly. “You’re right. She’s calling back.”

“She will call and call until I pick up. Sometimes I play a little game and see how long she’ll keep calling.”

“You’re cruel.”

Jessa chuckled, and I loved the sound of it. It was definitely in my top ten favorite sounds. Top five, even.

“Only a little. I’m not the one who ran out on a so-calleddate, remember?”

I placed my hand over my heart and groaned. “Iamcruel. How will I ever make it up to you? Should I start groveling now?”

“On your knees,” she teased, and let out a startled gasp when I did exactly as she asked and sank to my knees in front of her.

“Prepare for groveling.”

“Oh, my God, get up,” she hissed, but I shook my head. “I didn’t mean it. It was just a joke.”

Jessa took a step forward and pulled on my arms, trying to draw me to my feet.

“Come to my practice on Friday,” I asked, moving my arms back.

Jessa stumbled, but I caught her before she tumbled to the scratchy carpet in front of me.

Poorly. I caught her poorly.
