The three of us sit and stand in silence for thirty seconds until the detective arrives. He looks around the room briefly, not expecting to have others here. He looks at me, and I suddenly feel like a naughty schoolboy in front of his teacher.
"Mr. McDonagh, I am Detective Heard. I have some questions I’d like to ask you. Perhaps somewhere a little more private?"
"Of course," I say.
I know it’s about the abortion and fake documents. I still do not know what is going to come of it.
"Right this way." I shepherd him out of the room, leaving Teal and Charlie behind.
ACTING OUT
"What happened?" Logan asks. "Is he still in his trailer?"
"Yeah, and he’s being a complete asshole," I state.
"All right, can everyone just calm down for a second?"
I shake my head and breathe through my nose. "And byeveryone, you mean me, right? Because there’s no one else around. And it’s because I’m pregnant, isn’t it?"
"I am on your team," he soothes. "If he is in the wrong, we will fix it, all right?"
"Yeah, but how canhebe in the wrong? He’s John Croakes! Are we just going to let him walk?"
Logan takes a deep breath. "I don’t want to. It took forever to cast him, so if we let him walk, it will delay production for a few weeks. I thought he was perfect for this role."
"Heisperfect for the role, but he wants to improvise every scene! He’s ruining the integrity of everything. He’s trying to add humor to the birth scene on Tarkan. Fucking humor! What the fuck is wrong with him?"
Logan stops walking and takes me by the shoulders. He looks me in the eye, and I’m sure he knows I can’t resist his burnt chestnut eyes, especially when I’m feeling all muddled like this. I rub my face only so I don’t have to be bewitched by him.
"Teal, I am on your side. If he is being an asshole, he can leave the production, and we will find someone else. However, we cannot go in there together if you are going to be screaming and shouting. We do not lower ourselves to his level, all right?"
"Yeah," I murmur.
"Teal, I do have your back, but we need to be on the same page."
I look into his eyes again and want to leap into his arms and kiss him. I’m a mess of emotions and hormones, and I’ve not had any sex since the last time I was intimate with Logan. I need some, and not just with anyone, I need it with Logan. However, this fucking production keeps getting increasingly complicated, and there are always problems. I can barely think about anything else when writers are stirring up shit, and actors think they are God’s gift!
"Teal!" shouts Logan. "Are we on the same page?"
I take a deep breath. I’m better than this. "Yeah, we are. I’m sorry, I just—"
"You do not have to be sorry about anything. You are creating a life inside your body while dealing with all this. Come on. We will go and face him together."
We walk to John’s trailer, and there is loud music playing inside. Logan pounds on the door, and the music stops a second later. A moment after that, John opens the door.
"Mr. McDonagh! To what do I owe the pleasure?"
The polite greeting makes my blood boil. He has not once extended me the same courtesy, and I know it’s because I’m not a man with infinite wealth. Everyone knows I am pregnant. They also know Logan is the father, and they all think I’m some gold digger who only got a job here because I slept with him. I got this fucking job on my own fucking merit.
I have to take another deep breath to calm myself down before I say something I will regret.
"John, there seems to be a problem with some of your scenes," Logan notes. "We have a very strict shooting schedule, and we are not allowing any changes to the script. I am sure you can understand that."
"What the fuck did she say to you?" John asks.
"She has a name!" I shout, holding in all the other things I want to shout at him.
"Please!" warns Logan. "We can keep this civil and work it out like adults. John, I will need you to work with the vision of this project. I know you have had flexibility in the past, but this work is different."
