"What?" she asks. "You tired me out."

"We need to talk about some things before I start to crash."

"Ugh, always bringing it back to the boring stuff." She smiles. "But you are right. We have a week to get this deal done, and you only just made your first hire for your company. As your only employee, I have to inform you that we need to move fast with this."

"Here is what I want. When we have the rights, I want to publish the book on a limited run and then reprint it after a year. We need to make sure we drip-feed the public with this."

"And we are thinking TV, right?" asks Teal.

"Not until we have the book out there. I do not know what is best for this book yet."

"Wait, so what do I get?"

"You get to run the company. I told you that once we have the rights, you can make any decisions you want."

"This is what Charlie wants also. We don't want to do a movie and sequels, right? Streaming affords us the option of adapting the work without losing anything important.

"This is a win for all of us," I say.

"Well, I don't see it as a win for me. Look, I know this is about more than just the rights to a book. I get that your mother instilled this love in you, but you can't control everything."

"Why not?" I ask. "This is what I have been working toward for the last month or two. Everything else is on hold."

"And you wanted to partner with me."

"Yes, as a means to an end."

"So, I don't get a say in anything? I run a company that is really run by you."

"No, I amnotsaying that. Why does everything have to become a fight between the two of us?"

"Becauseyouneed to exert control over this book even thoughIam supposed to be in charge, and I am worried that the same thing is going to happen with our child."

Teal realizes that her voice is a little loud when the server comes back with the pancakes. She thanks her politely before looking at me. "Well? You haven't denied it yet. So, what do you think this relationship is going to look like? Are you going to want to control everything?"

"No," I state. "I do not need to control everything."

"Well, that's not what it sounds like. I can see it all over your face. What have you already decided for our child?"

"Nothing."

"I know you, Logan. Just spit it out so I can deal with this now."

"This is not about control, but I have already looked at a couple of schools he or she might attend."

"Oh, yeah? Schools around here, you mean?"

"No, schools in New York, and there is one in Washington."

"Oh, so I have to move across the country or never see my child? That's what you are telling me now."

"Will you please keep your voice down?" I ask. "I am not asking you to move across the country. I have not talked to anyone. I am only thinking about our child's future."

"You don't need to do that. Our child will have a future. What about you, Logan? Did you grow up wealthy with everything taken care of?"

"No, my father built his business, and it grew when I took it over."

"Do you want to know the thing I like most about you?"
