"I do not—"

Charlie cuts me off. "Here we are. You probably recognize this room fromA.I. Love You. Everyone knows thatLucky In Lovewas filmed in this house, but not many know thatA.I. Love Youwas filmed mainly in this room."

"Uh, you will have to remind me of that one," says Teal.

Charlie enters the room, and we follow her in.

"Is this a panic room?" I ask.

"It is indeed. In the book, an A.I. goes rogue in a house and locks the man and woman in a panic room together. That's when they finally fall for each other. It was one of my best ideas for a romance plot."

"Did you bring us down here to give us a tour of the house?" I smile. "People are going to start talking if we are not back soon."

I hope that a little humor might bring her around. If she brought us down here alone, then she probably wants to give more than a tour of the house.

"I just wanted to help you see something."

"And what is that?"

"Give me a minute," says Charlie.

She leaves the room, and the door slides closed immediately after. I wait for it to open again. When it does not, I look around the room, failing to see what she is getting at.

"Hello!" shouts Teal, knocking on the door. "Charlie!"

There is no answer, but Teal’s phone starts to ring.

"Hello?"

I move closer to try and hear what is going on.

"What?" asks Teal. "Twelve hours?"

"Give me the phone," I demand. I take it from Teal. "Miss Morton, what is going on?"

"You must forgive me," she pleads. "I do not know if you hit something or I did, but the panic room door just closed. I do not have the code—my friend is on a wellness retreat and has no cell service. But do not panic! The door will reset in twelve hours, and you will be let out again."

"Twelve hours? Miss Morton, did you lock us in here on purpose?"

"I detest that accusation. Listen, some things are meant to be, and some things are not. You have to accept that."

Then the line goes dead. I want to throw the phone across the room, but it is not mine to throw.

"The deal is dead," I say. "That is why she locked us in here. I do not understand why she had to do it this way, but she is going to go up there and talk with everyone else. She wants us out of the picture. We are stuck here for twelve hours."

"That is illegal, isn't it?"

"It does not matter. We are trapped, and we can do nothing about it."

"Ugh! I am going to kill her when we get out of here. I thought she liked me! Okay, so who can you call to get us out of here?"

"Me?" I ask. "No one. What am I going to say? A middle-aged author accidentally locked us in a panic room?"

"I don't know. We can't stay in here though."

"I don't know what you expect me to do."

"Ugh, you are useless!"
