“I do.”

“And I don’t suppose that ‘stuff’ might be six-foot-two and blond like the sunshine?”

Here I am, having small talk about the love of my life with his new love interest. “Look, Kasia, I’m sorry about last night. I don’t want to get in between the two of you.”

“In between us?” She pulls a very peculiar face. “Do you really have no idea?”

“Idea about what?”

“Oh, honey. We gotta talk.” She shouts out the change room door. “Alli and I will join you in ten! I’ve just got to school her on some life stuff first.” She closes the door and points at a bench. “Sit. I have a feeling that what I’m about to tell you is going to come as a surprise.”

I sit.

“You thought he and I were dating?”

“I know you are. I saw you last night.”

“Did you hear what we were saying?”

“Sure.” I don’t see why this is relevant to anything. In fact, it’s prolonging the agony of having to face the fact that Terence has opened up to her.

She crosses her arms and fixes her eyes on me. It’s like being in the principal’s office again, like the time I was dancing on the bookshelves and accidentally smashed through the school window. Fortunately, I wasn’t hurt, but if I had been, he might have gone easier on me.

Her voice rumbles. “Tell me what you heard.”

“Terence telling you about his insecurities and dreams.”

“About?”

“About—uh—starting up the mountain search and rescue service at the Dog’s Paw.”

Kasia’s face breaks out in a big smile, followed by a laugh that fills the changeroom. “Oh, girl. You have proven why spying should be left for the pros.”

“Huh?” I’m searching my mind for some other explanation for what I heard, but nothing comes.

“He wasn’t talking about the search and rescue business.” She leans forward and taps my nose. “He was talking about you.”

It’s not possible. I shake my head. “No.”

She nods. “Yes.”

“No.”

“I’m telling you, yes.”

I’m pretty sure the world just stopped.

“All right,” she says. “I can see that you need a few minutes to deal with this earth-shattering news. So I’ll cover for you with an excuse, something about just discovering that her childhood best friend is in love with her, and you can join when you’re ready. Okay? Okay!”

And she rolls off like the wind.

I’m left behind, where the ground is shaking like the biggest earthquake of my life. Or maybe that’s just my hands.

Terence… feels for me… the way I feel for him?

I can’t believe it’s true. I can’t.

But I’m going to find out.
