Uh…

“I…”

“Yeah, I think you should go back and talk to her.”

I shook my head defiantly. “Absolutely not. There’s no way in hell that I’m going back to that apartment. I just made myself look like a total dumbass.”

“Are you sure? Because I think this is the first time in your entire life that you’re actually being vulnerable to someone other than me. There’s nothing wrong with falling for someone and then telling them your feelings.”

“I don’t have any feelings for her,” I lied, unable to make eye contact with Owen.

“Don’t be like this.” He kicked me under the table.

“Ugh, fine,” I groaned, running my fingers through my hair. “Yeah, so I have some feelings for her—and yeah, I think I might be in love with her. She’s just fucking different than all the other women I’ve ever met or been with, man. She’s special.”

Owen’s lips tugged into a smile. “Then tell her that.”

“Dude, she cut me off the last time I tried anything with her.” The rejection came flooding back the moment I admitted it. “I don’t think I want to go down that road again.”

“Let me guess, you came on to her, and she told you she didn’t want to sleep with you anymore.” There was a shift in his tone that made me freeze.

I narrowed my eyes, shocked by the sudden knowledge that Owen appeared to have. “What?”

“I know you’ve slept with my sister.”

“Wha—”

“No.” He held up a hand, cutting me off. “I’m going to give you one chance to tell me the fucking truth about what’s been going on. If you don’t, I’ll fucking deck you right here in the middle of the coffee shop.”

“Damn, brother bear has some balls,” I muttered to him as he dared me with his icy-blue eyes.

“Spill it.”

I let out a sigh. “Yeah, I slept with your sister more than once, and yeah, I think I caught feelings for her—which has never happened to me before.”

“Cool, so I already know all this.”

“Olivia told you?”

“Of course she did.” There was something on his face that made me wonder just how much he knew, but I was going to roll with it. He was giving me an out, and I was gonna take it. “I really think you should tell her how you feel, Eli. She’s leaving soon.”

“I know she is, and I’m not happy about it.”

“Me, either.”

“Yeah, but I can’t stop her from going. She got a good job offer, and I think that it would be wrong of me to try and convince her to stay.”

“But you caring about her might be enough of a reason to want to stay.”

“I don’t know.”

“Dude, she’s fucking leaving because of you,” Owen said, exasperated. “Go back to the damn apartment and talk to her. Tell her how you feel and just be a man.”

“Jeez, you’re coming down on me hard this morning.”

“No, I’m telling you what you should do if you care about her the way that I think you do. Drunk Eli might do a lot of shitty things, but he doesn’t lie.”

Hesitantly, I nodded. “Yeah, I know that I never lie when I’m wasted. I just…I don’t know. What if she doesn’t feel the same way?”
