Oh my god. I am so stupid.

I picked an ob-gyn connected to my brother’s office.

“Why were you here?” His voice had an edge to it that I couldn’t put my finger to, but it left my stomach feeling sicker than ever.

“Just my yearly,” I choked out.

Owen’s expression made it clear that he did not believe me. “Why’re you acting so weird about it then?”

Oh my god, my brother knows me too well.

“I’m not acting weird, you’re acting weird.”

The comeback didn’t phase him. “Come on, Olivia, don’t fucking lie to me. If something is going on, I want to know. I’m your brother. It’s my job to be here for you no matter what has happened. Is this the guy you’ve been seeing? Did he get you pregnant?” He said the word with such ease, while I struggled just to admit the word in my own mind.

“I’m not seeing anyone.” Well, not really.

“Okay, so what’re you holding there?” He motioned to the ultrasound pictures in my hand—that I had totally forgotten I was holding.

“Um…”

“Jesus, Olivia, you’re backed into a corner. Just tell me the truth.” Owen’s voice was sharp as he took a step toward me. I realized in the moment that this was it. There was nothing to do other than just confess.

“I am pregnant.” I spit the words out with more confidence than I had expected, though my mouth felt dry afterward.

His face didn’t budge, though his voice did soften. “I already made that conclusion based on those pictures in your hand. Let’s go grab some lunch and talk about this.”

I reluctantly nodded, my shoulders slumping as I fell in step with him. “I’m only nine weeks along.”

“Okay,” Owen said, his voice coming out awkward like maybe the thought was making him uncomfortable. “You wanna eat at Louie’s? It’s just a block or so away.”

“Yeah, that’s fine.” As the words left my mouth, my phone vibrated in my purse, the feeling hitting me in the side. I dug out my phone as we walked, expecting it to be a text from Zena. She had made me promise to tell her how things went with Dr. Huskins. However, that was not who the text was from.

Are you okay?

I read the three words from Eli, surprised by the question. Since when did he give a fuck if I was okay? Last time I checked, he just wanted to hump and dump me whenever he felt like it...

All feelings aside.

I tossed the phone back into my purse, leaving it unanswered and focusing on the silence that had fallen between Owen and me. We never had moments like this—and I hated that we were now starting to.

“Do you know who the father is?” His question came out quiet, barely audible above the city noise.

Offense was my initial reaction, but I swallowed it. “Yeah, I do. I’ve only slept with one person since I moved here.”

He eyed me, and for some reason it felt like he already knew the answer to the who behind the question. “Someone I know?” Owen reached for the door of the restaurant, holding it open for me.

The scent of burgers hit me, making my stomach knot up from hunger. “Um…” was all I said as I stepped into the dimly lit place.

“You can tell me once we sit down,” Owen said as soon as the hostess greeted us with a big, cheesy smile.

“Just two dining in today?”

“Yeah.” Owen shifted his gaze from me to the booth that she was leading us to.

I steadied my breath as I followed the two of them, ignoring the eyes that seemed to be watching us. I knew that in reality they really weren’t, but my pounding heart and nervous stomach said otherwise.

“Here you go.” She set down two menus. “Your server will be with you shortly.”
