Olivia is not the one.

I shook my head, trying to brush her off—but there was something in her words that was triggering me. “I don’t know what you’re trying to assume, but you have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Right, so this girl doesn’t keep you up at night? She doesn’t drive you crazy and consume all your thoughts? You’re not nitpicking every single thing she does? I bet you’re trying to label whatever is happening as a fling, thinking it’ll just go away.”

Shit.

“None of that means she’s the one, and who the hell even knows if that theory exists. It’s been proven time and time again that women are just...distractions.”

“You only say that because your dad said that to you and your brothers. That is why you believe that.”

“Well, I didn’t exactly have a mom around.” I couldn’t hide the resentment from my voice. My mom had bailed on us when I was just a kid, running off to start all over with some guy she met in Rome.

And even worse, the guy was broke, not a fucking penny to his name.

“Your mom tried to reach out...” Alicia’s voice was full of caution, and I knew that we had discussed this at one point. She was a therapist, and she had taken me on like a challenge.

“Yeah, anyway…” I stopped her before she went any further. “It was good to see you, Alicia. I’m glad that everything is working out for you. For the record, I’m glad that Brian won you over. He put in so much effort it was almost sad.”

She laughed, rolling her eyes. “And it never once made you jealous.”

I jerked my head back to her. “No, why would it?”

“Do you get jealous over your girl?”

My mouth went dry as I thought back to Julio. “No,” I lied, catching sight of the barista waving to me. “I’ll see you around.”

Hopefully not.

The woman had sent my head spinning about Olivia. Was there something more between us? I mean, yeah, I knew that something was up—but trying to label her as...as the one?

Shit, shit, shit.

“What can I get for you, Mr. Whiss? Just your usual?” Samuel, the young barista who almost always took my order, gave me a smile.

“Yeah, that’s fine. Make it fast too. I’m running late.”

“Of course.” He nodded, ringing it up and taking my card. “Anything for you.”

I stepped off to the side, watching carefully as Alicia put in her order, taking her sweet time. She was a good woman, but it didn’t take long to realize why she and I never would’ve worked out.

“Mr. Whiss,” one of the workers called, holding out my latte.

I quickly took it from him. “Thanks. Have a great day.” I spun on my heel and nearly broke into a jog to get the hell out of there. I didn’t even want to give Alicia the chance to continue questioning me about anything at all. She had already rocked my world in the wrong direction.

I’m not going to actually fall for Olivia...

Or had I already? The thought made my chest feel a little tight. The last thing I needed was some kind of serious relationship that led to...marriage.

Or worse.

Kids.

I shuddered at the thought. Not because I didn’t want kids—it was just the fact that it only brought back memories of my mom slipping out on us with no warning. I mean, sure, she tried to tell me about all her reasons and how Dad never listened to her.

But dude, he had been crushed when she left.

The bitterness and resentment that had settled in on his shoulders had been more than enough to keep me from straying into the idea that love was anything other than just a fucking waste. He had gone on to say later that women were just distractions and stumbling blocks.
