Oh shit.

My hands began to get sweaty, and my stomach started to churn at the new information I was learning about his sister. Nothing that Olivia had said had seemed like she was thinking we were something more than just a couple hookups, but now...

I might have just royally fucked this up.

I blew out a sigh, trying to come up with something in the moment as I was being mind-fucked. “I guess I get it...but why are you coming to me for this?”

Owen’s brow furrowed. “Uh, because you’re her boss. I figured that she might confide in someone around the office—like Zena or something? She doesn’t have any friends here in the city. Well, except you, I guess. You’re kind of an inherited friend.”

And fuck buddy.

I nodded, clearing my throat. “I haven’t heard anyone say anything.”

“She was out a couple of nights ago with a friend,” Owen said, narrowing his eyes. “Was it you?”

I nearly choked on the air I was trying to breathe. “What do you mean? I wasn’t out with her.”

Lies. I’m full of lies.

“Oh, damn. Must be the new man then.”

“Are you sure it wasn’t just a work friend or something?” Despite knowing exactly what happened after the fact, I actually had no clue who she had been with prior to meeting up with me...

And I was curious.

“I don’t know. She just told me about a friend. She can be like that—when she’s hiding something from me. She starts keeping everything a fucking secret and it drives me crazy.”

I nodded, wiping my palms on my suit pants and hoping that Owen didn’t notice. “I don’t know what to tell you, man. I just know that it is what it is. She’s old enough to keep her life to herself if that’s what she wants to do.”

“I know.” He let out a sigh. “But you’d tell me if you knew anything, right? Because I don’t want anything to happen to her in the city. You know as well as I do how many assholes are floating around—and they’ll take advantage of her.”

The guilt was burning as I nodded, still trying to figure out where the hell all the oxygen had gone in the room. “For sure. Yeah. I’ll ask her about who she was with if you want me to.”

“Dude, you’re the best. I know you can get it out of her.”

That’s a weird assumption.

“You can talk to anyone about anything. You’ve got charisma that I don’t have—and that shit works on Olivia...unfortunately.”

I swallowed hard, my mind filling with the memory of her body under mine—fucking torture. “Yeah, I’ll do my best.”

“Hey, here are the places that we spotted,” Zena greeted me as she set the list down on my desk. “We took pictures too. I’ll share them in the group.”

“Yeah, that’s great.” I smiled, peering around her. I had expected Olivia to show up with her, but she wasn’t there. I glanced up at the clock. It was nearly five p.m., and I couldn’t help but wonder if she was just trying to avoid me.

“Olivia wasn’t feeling great and went home,” Zena said quickly. “I forgot to tell you that when I walked in—I’m sorry. That’s on me, not her.”

I raised a brow at the way Zena was quick to take up for Olivia. “Yeah, it’s not a big deal. It’s the end of the day, and you two accomplished what I asked.”

“Okay, cool.” Zena appeared relieved. “It was a really productive day. Olivia has a great eye for shooting. I think Harlee will be happy with what we came up with. Olivia really knows what she’s doing.”

“Great,” I muttered, glancing over to the computer like it didn’t mean anything to me. “I guess it’s a good thing she weaseled her way onto the team then.”

“Um, yeah, I guess so.”

Wait, they spent the day together...maybe she knows.

I whipped my head back to Zena, taking in her fiery red hair piled on top of her head. It was a bit windblown, and it made me wonder what Olivia’s hair looked like in that state, making my dick jump to life.
