She smiled at him, not able to hide her amusement over his overreaction. Rayen pulled her to her feet with the hand he was holding and started guiding her towards the door. As she looked back, she saw Silas quickly following while Amon sat back down. He didn’t play, just stared into the air. He seemed sad, not the arrogant, cold man she’d known so far.

She stopped by the bottom of the stairs, pulled her hand back, and started to look around. “Wait, I need my wallet. Where is my bag?”

“Don’t worry, if I take you out for food you’ll never have to pay.” Rayen’s voice was light.

She looked down at herself and remembered how picky Amon used to be about her looks. “I don’t have anything else to wear.”

“We don’t care what you wear.” Silas stood behind her gently laying his hand on her lower back and pushing her towards the door.

“But…” She turned and looked up the stairs as if she expected to see Amon standing up there judging her.

Rayen gently took her hand in his again. “Would you like to wear your shoes?”

“No, if you don’t mind. We can go through a drive-through. No one will know.”

“How exciting, my first rodeo so to speak.” His eyes fell on Silas who was still walking behind her. “No, you’ll just ruin my first time with her. Your grumpy ass will just go off on everyone who looks at her.”

Silas was about to oppose but Amon’s warning voice came from above. “Silas, stay.”

“Come on, little bird.”

Once in the car she leaned her head against the glass and watched as Rayen drove down the driveway.

“Where would you like to eat?”

She sighed thinking about it, three places popped in mind, each one only for one item. “I don’t know, I could go for McDonald’s or Chick-fil-A or even Whataburger. McDonald’s is the closest though.”

“I would travel the world for you. There is no need to be shy.”

“Are you sure? You might regret this.”

“I would never regret making you happy.”

“Well, McDonalds for the fries and ice-cream, Chick-fil-A for the lemonade, and Whataburger for the burger.”

He seemed excited. “By the time we drive to the last place I’ll be a drive-through champion.” He looked left and right. “Where to first?”

“I think Whataburger, so left.”

He nodded and followed her instructions.

Arriving at their destination he eagerly looked at her for direction. She giggled and pointed at the drive-through lane.

“Just drive right through there, roll your window down and stop at the menu. Someone will ask for your order.”

“And what is my order?”

“A double meat Whataburger with extra bacon and cheese.”

He nodded and followed her instructions. It was odd telling a grown man how to use a drive-through, but it also warmed her heart, how eager he was to do it right. As they drove off and he handed her the burgers–he’d ordered two–he seemed proud of himself.

“Very interesting.”

“So how old are you that you never used a drive-through?”

He tilted his head and grinned. “I don’t think you’re ready for that yet, little bird.”

“So very old, I’m guessing.”
