After I had my dresser, yeah, my dresser, fitted out how I wanted it, I heard Lily. “Hey, are you ready?”

I looked at Lily and then nodded.

And on my bed, while Lily drew more artwork that shocked me, a pizza box was settled there with Melanie and William all eating.

And over the course of the next nine years, I had a mom, a dad, and a little sister that never missed a football game. And William never missed one of my fights when I needed it.

And for the first time in my life, I got birthday and Christmas presents.

Chapter 1

Aliyah

“Shit. Fuck. Damn.” I mumbled under my breath so my four-year-old wouldn’t pick up on the words, and then go around saying them to everyone we see.

I sighed.

The message I had woken up to this morning had me gritting my teeth.

But then I stopped doing that immediately.

Babies were a joyous occasion.

I only had to look at my boy to know that statement has never been truer.

Well, at least one of the professors told us at the start of classes that if we needed her help in any way that we should reach out to her. Right?

After I had Crew and everything he would need for the day, I hoped, I pressed a kiss on his cheek and then wrapped him in my arms, and together we headed to the campus.

I knocked on Professor Macklin’s door with Crew in my arms, and the moment I heard her say enter, I twisted the doorknob and then opened the door.

She looked up at me, smiled, and then looked at Crew, and smiled even wider, “Well, hello there young man, are you touring the campus?”

Crew giggled and then shook his head.

I smiled, then looked back at the professor, “At the start of class you told us if there was anything you could do to ensure we didn’t miss a lecture that all we had to do was to come and tell you, right?”

“That’s correct,” she gave me her full attention then.

“The campus daycare is down a teacher. Her daughter had her baby last night. And she was his teacher. So, I have Crew with me today, is it okay if he sits with me during class? I promise he won’t make a fuss.”

“Are you a single mother?” she asked.

I nodded, “Yes, ma’am. It’s just me and Crew. I don’t have any parents or family anymore.”

That was when she nodded and then said, much to my amazement, “I admire you, sweetheart. For taking on your dreams and still being a young mother. That takes a hel… heck of a woman to do that.”

I smiled at her curbing her language and then I nodded, “Thank you, Professor.”

She nodded, “Anytime you need to bring him to class, you go right ahead. And if he gets sick just email me, and I can email you the lecture if you need to miss a day, okay?”

I nodded, gratefully. “Thank you, Professor. Okay, we are going to find our seats.”

We had just turned and headed for the door when she called out, “Oh, and Ms. Turner?”

I looked at her over my shoulder and then asked, “Yes, Professor?”

“If any of your professors tell you that you can’t have him with you today, then you send them to me, okay?” she said with such a stern voice that if they refused my request, I really wanted to be a fly on the wall when she tore into them.
