Without a word to us, he stormed over to the guy that had slammed the door in our faces, grabbed him by the back of his neck, and dragged him over to us.

“You see them? They are mine. They have full access to me. Don’t you ever slam the door in their faces ever again? Do you understand me?”

“Yeah, D. I got it.”

“Apologize,” he growled.

“I’m so sorry,” the guy stammered out and with his apology, Daemon released the guy.

He lifted his head, looked into my eyes, and said, “Really sorry. All the time we have girls knocking on the door for the players and nine times out of ten, they are unwelcomed. It’s just easier to do what I did to y’all. It won’t happen again.”

I nodded, “Thank you for apologizing, and I get it. I’m Aliyah. And this is Crew.”

“I’m Anthony Finch. Everyone calls me Finch.” I nodded at him.

Daemon knelt in front of Crew and asked, “You okay, buddy?”

I could tell he was worried that what he did scared Crew. But I knew my boy, and that was proven true when he did what he did next.

Crew smiled wide at him and nodded, “Yeah, that was so cool. When I get older will you teach me how to do that?”

Daemon smiled, “Long as it’s okay with your mama.”

At my nod, Crew smiled, then Daemon led us over to the couch and we settled in to watch the fight with him.

Finch had left when we came in, and said he was meeting the others at some party.

I found out last week that Daemon participated in underground fighting rings that were sanctioned. It had scared me at first, not wanting him to get hurt, but I knew Daemon.

I knew if he thought he could get seriously hurt, then he wouldn’t do it.

Anyway, the fight he wanted to watch was a fighter that his old coach had taken on.

They were in the second round when Crew asked, “What’s that move called, Dae?”

And that was something else that changed right after the night at the arcade. Crew had asked Daemon if he could have his own name for him, and Daemon had nodded and told him to call him whatever he wanted and he would answer to it. So, they had settled on Dae.

Daemon looked at him and said, “It’s called an armbar. It’s painful.”

“It looks like it,” Crew mumbled.

After the guy won, we all clapped and then Daemon looked at me, “Y’all need to head home?”

I shook my head, “Long as you’re cool with it, we can stay.”

And I would have said that all day long to get that smile on his face.

Then he looked at Crew, grabbed a controller, and asked, “Want to play?”

“I don’t know how,” Crew said with his eyes alight with wonder.

“Good thing I know how. Let's do it,” he said as he handed him the controller, then he grabbed another one.

And then I was watching the two of them play Madden, and my little boy was having the time of his life.

It was ten minutes later when the door opened, and all of us turned our heads in that direction.

Daemon jerked his chin, “Hey, thought y’all were going to that party.”
