“Weird, how?” I ask carefully, the waffles I ate rolling in my stomach and threatening to reappear.

“You’ve noticed it too?” Rei asks. “I swear I thought I had something on my face with how hard one girl stared at me earlier.”

Shit.

This was bad. Really, really bad.

What did you think? That they would just forget about it?

I was actually surprised that none of my friends heard what happened. Then again, we pretty much hung out in our own little group for the better part and rarely partook in the campus gossip. Did this even count as college gossip?

“It’s not you,” I say softly, pressing my hand against my stomach. My insides feel like they’re tied into one big knot. “They’re staring at me.”

“You?” I can hear the confusion in Jade’s voice. “But you don’t have anything on your face. You know we would have told you.”

“That’s not it. I—” My tongue darts out, sliding over my dry lips. Henry must feel my distress because he stands up, nudging me with his snout. I sink my fingers into his fur, wishing more than anything that I could just bury my head into his neck and get lost in his familiar scent. Instead I settle with running my fingers through his thick coat as I finish, “They’re looking at me.”

“I don’t get it. Why would they be looking at you?”

“Somebody took a photo of Sebastian and me and sold it to reporters.”

My explanation is greeted with utter silence. My fingers tighten as the anxiety grows bigger inside of me. And then all hell breaks loose as all my friends start talking at once.

“What the fuck?”

“You’re joking, right?”

“Who would do that?”

I wish I knew. Who would do something like that? And why? Nobody seemed to bother Sebastian, well, apart from Lilian. Was it her? But why would she do something like that? It made no sense.

I tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. “I’m afraid not. There is some kind of article going around, and everybody’s been acting weird since yesterday. I assume the appearance of paparazzi on campus doesn’t help either.”

“There are paparazzi on campus?” Grace gasps.

“Yup. They were waiting for Sebastian in front of the music building yesterday. We had to sneak out the back exit.”

Thankfully, it seemed they didn’t figure out where we lived. I hoped that would stay the case, but a part was skeptical especially considering Sebastian seemed worried about it.

Worried about me.

Which was silly. Why would paparazzi bother with me when he was the main attraction? Highly unlikely.

“This sounds like something out of a movie,” Rei mutters next to me.

“Or a nightmare,” I add dully.

Seriously, why were they so obsessed with this? So what? Sebastian was in Blairwood going to college. It wasn’t that unusual. Couldn’t they just leave us in peace?

You should come with me. To L.A.

My throat tightens as Sebastian’s invitation flashes in my head. If I accepted his offer, there would be no avoiding reporters, not in L.A.

Here Sebastian might have been mine, but out there, he was theirs.

“What in the ever—” Jade starts, but there is a softthumpcoming from underneath the table, followed by, “Ouch. What was that for?”

“What?” I lean my head to the side, trying to figure out what’s going on and why they’re suddenly acting weird.
