“Doyou think you can grab me a glass of water?” Quinn, who’s currently balled up in a fetal position, asks from her side of the bed.

“Of course. You okay, babe?”

“Yeah, I should be fine. Just having some cramps…”

“Do you think you pulled something? You did kick ass on that bull.”

“I don’t think that’s it… Ouch.” She winces as she rolls over to face me.

“Okay, let me go grab you some water. Try not to move.”

Walking into the kitchen, my mom and Vanessa are still cleaning up, even after we insisted they call it a night.

“Will you two stop it already? The place is spotless.”

“Oh, shush. We were just cleaning up after ourselves… We had a late-night snack,” Vanessa says.

I grab a glass out of the cabinet and fill it with water. “All right, well, you all behave… gotta take this to Q. She’s having some bad cramps.”

“Aw, poor thing. Go take care of my baby, and let me know if you need anything,” her mom says, concern etched across her face.

By the time I reenter our bedroom, Quinn is moaning in pain. Rushing to her side, I put my hand against her forehead. She’s sweating profusely. My panic rises as she grips her stomach and groans again.

“Baby… are you okay?”

“I—I don’t know.” Her eyebrows pinch as another wave of pain hits hers and she moans in agony.

Fuck.

“I'm not taking any chances… I’m taking you to the ER.” I know I'm making the right decision when she doesn't protest. She wouldn’t want me to fuss over her for no reason.

“Let me go bring our moms the monitor, then we will head out.”

Giving her a kiss on the forehead before I step away, I whisper, “I love you, Queenie. It will all be okay.”

Thirty

“Quinn’s doing a little better… the pain medicine gave her some relief, so that’s a plus,” I say through the phone to a concerned Sloan. “But they are going to do surgery to try an untwist her right fallopian tube.” I peek over at Quinn, who has her eyes closed while I mindlessly play with her hair. Even though I know she isn’t asleep, I’m hoping she doesn’t hear the anxiety in my voice.

There’s something going on with her… other than just pain. She feels distant… and I don’t understand if it’s worry or something else.

“Okay, after your last update, her parents and Brayden are already on the way. Wes and I will head there now.” She takes a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. I know she is stressed, just like we all are after seeing Quinn the way she was earlier. “Mom, Dad, and Maddie can stay with the girls. Mom is rocking Sophie back to sleep as we speak.”

“Does she have a fever?” It's unusual for Sophie to be awake at this time of night.

My question causes Quinn’s eyes to pop open in concern.

“No fever… I think she just wasn’t expecting us to be the ones to soothe her.”

Sophie girl definitely wants her mama.

“But no worries, you know mom’s got this,” Sloan rushes out.

“Give her a small sippy cup of milk and rock her for a few minutes.” The anesthesia team walks in the door right as I finish my statement. “She should fall asleep soon. Thank you guys, and call me if she won’t go back down. The doc just walked in—I’ll update you once she’s in the OR.”

Hanging up the phone before I even hear what my sister says, I stand to greet the two new faces. “Sorry about that… the little one wasn’t expecting to wake up and not see one of us there.”

“No worries at all. I have three myself, so I totally understand.” The older man washes his hands and moves over toward Quinn.
