“I… know,” the woman said.

“Ah, yes. Famous,” I said. “I forget that sometimes. And you are?”

“C-Colleen,” she said. “Colleen McGrath. Julia is my daughter.”

“I see,” I said. “Nice to meet you. I assume you own this…”

I searched for a word to finish the sentence and got nothing. Was it a pub? A bar? A former place of business? Were they actually serving drinks like it was now?

“I do,” she said. “McGrath’s Pub. My husband and I own it. Owned. He’s dead.”

There was an awkward silence for a moment.

“Thank you, Mom,” Julia said. “Since we’re here, this is my sister, Lena.”

Lena waved from the distance. I raised my hand to greet her back and her hand withered back down to her side.

“Hey, would you like to take a little walk?” I asked.

“Yup,” Julia said, moving so quickly toward me that I had to step back out into the sunshine to get out of her way. As soon as she was through the rickety door, she shut it. It bounced back open.

From deep inside, a sarcastic voice echoed. “You can’t shut it from outside, Jules.”

Sighing and rolling her eyes before slapping on another smile, Julia began walking and I had to jog to keep up with her.

“Is there a coffee shop or something nearby?” I asked. “Somewhere we could talk.”

“Not really,” she said. “There’s a hotel a couple of blocks down. It’s where I was staying before I…”

“Before you?”

“I just moved back into town,” she said. “Clearly. You saw my résumé. I just moved back, so for the first night I stayed up there. Now I’m keeping my mom company.”

“Ahh, you live at home?”

“Yes,” she said. “For now. Not for long. Obviously.”

“Obviously?”

“I just… I’m an adult. Right? Oh, God.”

She looked like she was torturing herself and I grinned. Clearly, I caught her off-guard, and much like the interview, she was beginning to spiral. It was the only negative thing I had seen in her that might affect how she did the job, but it was so damn cute and interesting I didn’t care. It was kind of funny.

“Does the hotel have a lobby?” I asked.

“It does. It’s just… small.”

“Then we don’t need it,” I said, hoping to calm her down a little. “We can just talk out here. It’s nice to get some sunshine anyway.”

“Sure,” she said.

She crossed her arms over her chest, and not for the first time, my eyes roamed over her body. I was trying not to, but it was difficult. She was wearing tight yoga pants and what looked like a sports bra underneath a tank top. It didn’t hide much, and what there was to see looked incredible. She was clearly an athletic person, but she wasn’t overly muscled either. Her body still had a mild softness to it that made me want to touch her, to hold her and squeeze her against me.

My mind raced with how it would feel to have her held up and pressed to my chest. How round and tight her ass was, and how my fingers could grip into them. I felt myself hardening and had to shake it off.

Concentrate, Hunter!

“So, you came to check my references?” she asked. “I suppose you now know the secret of this one. I figured my mother would give me a decent one, but to be honest, she might not. She’s a rather blunt woman.”
