“He does have some charming qualities,” I said, hoping that would ease his mind.

His head whipped up and he glared at me. “Are you saying I’m not charming?”

“No, I’m saying—”

“Because I’m charming as hell,” he said, stumbling backward. “I can cook. I can shoot. I can…cook.”

I nodded seriously at him. “Yep, and some lady is going to find that combination very sexy.”

He rushed forward, getting in my face. “Do you think you could teach me to rebuild a transmission?”

“Um…what?”

“So I can be like you. Then all the ladies would want me. Tell me, it’s the coveralls, isn’t it?”

Bowie snorted a laugh beside me, covering his mouth.

“It’s…the grease,” I said, not knowing what else to tell him.

“I figured,” he sighed, slumping onto the stool.

The door chimed behind us and Rae walked in, her eyes narrowing on me before shifting to Slider. My cock hardened just from seeing her. What I wouldn’t trade for one night with her. If it wasn’t for the drunk guy hanging all over me, I’d storm over to her and demand she give me a chance to explain what happened with Carly. But this wasn’t the time or place for that.

“Duke, what did you do to Slider?” she asked as she sauntered over.

“He was like this when we got here.”

She eyed him suspiciously. “He’s been like this the whole time?”

I nodded, taking a sip of my beer. As if Slider just realized Rae was there, his face brightened up.

“Hey! It’s Rae!” He burst out laughing, falling against me. “I’m a poet and I didn’t know it!”

“Yeah,” she nodded, walking over and shoving her shoulder under his arm. “How about we get you home?”

“Nah, I’m hanging out with my mechanic friend. Duke. Duke!” he shouted, laughing hysterically. “Hey, did you know he’s a mechanic?”

“Yes, I knew,” she said, her eyes flicking to mine.

She started to walk forward, but Slider stopped her with a hand to her chest. His face turned serious as he stared at her. “Tell me…I need to know.”

“Know what?” she asked, her face filled with confusion.

“I need to know…” He licked his lips, struggling to get the words out.

“Slider, let’s just get you home.”

He shook his head rapidly, stumbling as he did so. “No, not until you tell me!”

“Okay,” she said, trying to calm him down. “What do you need me to tell you?”

“What is it…that makes this man so damn appealing?” he asked, pointing his finger at me.

Rae rolled her eyes, clearly expecting a heavier question than that. “I don’t know.”

“No, no, no, no!” he yelled, stopping her from dragging him off. “I’m serious. I need to know, why the mechanic? What is it about our friend Duke that makes him a better catch?”

He walked over and slung his arm around my shoulders.
