The women turn to me in unison. Most look shocked by my eye, though I suspect they all know the story.

Wynonna shakes her head. “I can’t believe the version I got was true,” she insists. “I need to hear from your own lips what happened.”

“A seventy-year-old woman hit me in the face with a broom.”

Wynonna snickers. “Years ago, I got hit with a cane by one of the town elders.”

“In the face?”

“No, it was across the ass like a grandma whipping. My butt and hip were bruised for a week.”

“I’m sorry.”

Wynonna’s smile widens. “That old lady died a month later. Since then, the townsfolk suspect I might be a witch.”

“Really?” Selene asks, seeming so innocent yet maybe smelling bullshit.

Wynonna turns to her sister-in-law and shakes her head. “No, but I wish people did. I’d be able to cut in line at the store. It’d be great.”

“Does it hurt?” Yazmin asks me.

“Only when I’m awake.”

Callie steps next to Wynonna and exhales. “We’re going to need Bellinis.”

“Yes, a little bubbly.”

“We’re driving home,” Landry points out.

“Stop being a mature adult and live a little,” Wynonna insists before looping her arm with mine and walking toward the entrance. “What are you thinking beauty-wise?”

“I guess my nails.”

“Perfect. We’ll do our nails before heading to lunch with more booze. Ooh, I want scallops.”

The other women follow us inside the thankfully air-conditioned salon. We have the place to ourselves for the next hour. I settle into a chair and decide to be indulgent.

“Can I get the hair-conditioning treatment?” I ask the salon owner.

Soon, I have a Bellini in one hand and my hair is wrapped up with cling film and a towel. My feet are covered with lotion and the technician runs her knuckles across my heel.

Wynonna sips her Bellini and asks me, “Have you had any more trouble with the Kendra cunt?”

“No. The shop has been closed a lot between the thing yesterday and the afternoons I’ve spent with Hobo.”

Wynonna smirks. “Well, I also heard Kendra’s car burned up. That sure might keep her from stirring up shit.”

Everyone looks at me as if I might know about the details.

When I only shrug, Wynonna smiles softly. “Kourtney’s going to hate you so much.”

“Why?”

“She hates all women,” she replies before adding, “Until she doesn’t. Kourtney got picked on by chicks a lot growing up. It made her hostile toward women, but she’s nice to me at least half the time. That’s not bad.”

“She helped me with my divorce,” Selene announces. “And with Yazmin’s adoption.”

“And my adoption and divorce,” Landry adds.
