Yes, I would, but I still don’t have condoms, and I’m not risking it.

“And let all that food go to waste? No,” I said, my voice tight. I felt my jaw bunch when Becca pulled back to stare at me. She must’ve felt then that something was wrong.

“What’s going on?” She asked.

“Going on with what?”

“Did I do something wrong?” She asked.

“No Becca, not at all,” I said.

She stared at me a moment longer and then picked up her fork. She took a bite of the pancakes and then dropped the fork and winced.

“What did you do?” She asked, getting off the chair and rushing over to the trash bin, where she spat out the bite in her mouth.

I picked up my fork, cut through the pancake, and brought a bite to my lips. Then I rushed off the chair and spat it out, too. Becca had walked over to the sink and was rinsing out her mouth. I did the same.

“That’s not what you feed Mark every morning, is it?” She asked.

I must’ve poured a little too much sugar and spice into the pancake batter. It had tasted overly sweet and not in a good way.

“I promise you, that was a vile mistake,” I said.

“It better be,” she said saucily. “I’d make you something better, but no.”

“You don’t have to, I wanted to surprise you,” I said.

“Do we go out for dinner tonight? Make up for this sorry mess,” she asked, sitting back down.

“I’ll be busy tonight,” I said, immediately. Dinner tonight meant Becca would come back to my place to spend the night. I needed to clear my head. The last thing I needed was for Becca spending the night. All my good intentions went out of the window when she was close to me.

“Okay,” she said, looking at me strangely.

“I’ll be picking up Mark today, but he’ll be spending the weekend at Steve’s,” I informed her, trying to change the topic.

“Okay,” she said again, this time not even bothering to look at me.

“About your cafe, I have a few more suggestions” I said, wadding in now. She was already mad at me, might as well let it all out.

“Absolutely, Hunter, tell me what you think of the café,” she said, a sickly-sweet smile on her face.

“Well, I already said this, but you could convert that walkway you call a passage into a special seating area, it would afford you more space to seat your patrons,” I said.

“Anything else?” Becca asked.

“You haven’t said a thing about the first,” I reminded her.

“What will you have me say? I’ll just ignore it like you do?” Becca said, the smile on her face now strained. She got off the chair and looked down at me. “I’ll be late, I need to get to the cafe.”

“Becca...,” I started.

“Save it, Hunter, I understand,” she said quietly, then she turned away and went upstairs. I sat there, my mind whirling. Well, I’d gone and done it again, perfect.

“Think you can drop me off at home?” She asked when she made it back downstairs. She was dressed in her clothes from yesterday and had her bag strap on her shoulder. “I need to get changed.”

“Definitely,” I said, getting off the chair and rushing up to my room where I changed into some shorts and a polo. I’d drop her off, it was the least I could do.
