Davis was a handsome man, but this was work, and I did not on any condition want to get involved with my boss or my colleagues. I could deal with Davis if I had to, but I didn’t really want to. I was sure that it was really nothing to worry about. Famous last words.

Christian’s POV

Aiden and I walked into Nathan's office. I hadn’t seen him since he got back from his honeymoon with Sophie and I was eager to catch up. Nathan poured us coffee and then looked at me sternly.

“I leave you alone for a month and you get engaged?” he said, his brow arched in question. You didn't think to mention this at the wedding?

I burst out laughing, and Aiden was shaking beside me, trying to control his laughter. Nathan looked between us, his face unsmiling.

“And to Alex no less. Didn’t you say you’d never have anything to do with her?” he added.

I leaned against my chair and drank my coffee, deliberately avoiding the question.

“Seriously how’s this even possible?” he pressed. He seemed hung up on the topic.

“Well how’d you get engaged to Sophie? Loves happens man.” Love and a silly bet and a confused mother.

Alex and I had been back from our trip together for two weeks now. It had been a turning point for us.

Nathan's eyes widened in surprise. " I had you pegged for a lifelong bachelor, Christian. Plus, you hated her guts! Forgive me if I'm not so easily convinced,” Nathan insisted.

“We got over our differences,” I said nonchalantly. And I didn’t even have to lie about that one. We had gotten over our differences. Most of them at least, and the rest of them were buried so deeply, I was certain nothing could unearth them.

“I thought you were a confirmed bachelor too, Aiden said. Your mom must be delirious with happiness.”

“She’s already forcing us to pick a date,” I said shaking my head in bewilderment.

“You did announce an engagement. What did you expect. Should’ve kept it under wraps,” Nathan said laughing aloud.

“My mom announced an engagement. I had nothing to do with it,” I grumbled quietly.

“How does Alex feel about all of this?” Aiden asked.

“She did say yes, so maybe she doesn't feel too bad about it,” I said smugly. She’d kill me if she could hear me now. Or maybe not. She was basically having to say the same things to her friends.

“When’s the engagement party?” Aiden asked.

“Not anytime soon. We’re still exploring our relationship” I said, winking.

Nathan gave a loud laugh.

“Tell that to your mom,” he said.

I chuckled. "Yeah, it was a bit of a whirlwind decision. But when you know, you know, you know?"

Nathan nodded. "I'm really happy for you, Christian. Alex is a great girl. But I have to ask—why did you two decided to get engaged so quickly? You've only been together for a month, right?"

I took a sip of coffee, feeling a bit defensive. "Well, you know we've actually known each other for years now. I know it seems fast, but we knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. We didn't want to wait."

Nathan raised an eyebrow skeptically. "I see. And how did Alex get over all the time you've spent being a dick to her?”

“Was that really necessary?” I asked him, wincing slightly.

“I mean...” he said laughing.

“Don’t go putting ideas in her head,” I told him sternly.
