Then she looked at me strangely.

“What’s wrong, Val?” I asked her.

“What?” she asked.

“You looked a little strange for a minute there,” I told her.

“I’d probably just zoned out. I’ve been taking Zen classes lately, trying to get in contact with the inner me,” she said, laughing at my confused expression.

“How do you find the time?” I asked her.

“If I don’t create the time, I’ll go mad. I’m so busy I have to consciously take a breather,” she said waving at someone behind me.

“Why not take a vacation?” I asked.

“Well, this would be the worst time. I’m getting so many calls at work, and I probably wouldn’t be able to rest anyway” she said, scrunching up her face.

I look up and saw Nathan waving me over. I stood up and gave Val a little kiss on the forehead.

“Don’t wear yourself out. You’re still my sweet little Valentine,” I told her.

“You best not start calling me that again, or I’ll plan your stabbing to coincide with your wedding.”

“Uh oh, she's rhyming. I better be careful,” I said and we both burst out laughing. I wondered where Alex was. She still hadn’t made it back.

Maybe she’s avoiding you. I had messed up terribly. I should’ve immediately corrected my mom at the ball, and I still couldn’t think of any coherent reason why I hadn’t. It would’ve been very simple really. Now things were complicated. My mom was already hinting at a big wedding at the country club. I’d go crazy if I had to deflect her questions one more time. I shook my head and walked toward Nathan.

No need to dwell on all that now. This was a wedding and I was the best man. There was work to be done.

I finished up soon enough with Nathan and spied Alex at the bar, still with her mom, looking a minute from losing her mind. I could leave her to the torture, or I could gain her eternal gratitude by saving her. I choose the second option and detoured over to them.

“Sorry Linda, may I borrow Alex for a moment please?” I asked when I got to them.

“Sure, she’s all yours. We were just concluding some arrangements for the wedding dinner,” she said.

“Mom! We haven’t even settled on a date yet,” Alex said, looking exasperated.

“Honey, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.” Then she turned to Christian. “I’ll see you two love birds later,” she said before taking leave of us.

“I’ll see you love birds later,” Alex mimicked, a dead ringer for her mom. “A minute more and I literally might’ve gone crazy sitting there.”

“Your knight to the rescue, princess,” I said. “You can thank me later.”

Alex laughed just like I’d wanted her to, before linking her arms through mine and steering me away from the bar. The wedding was almost over, and most of the guests were saying their goodbyes to the newly wedded couple or were on the dance floor, getting in their last dances.

“You want to dance some more?” Alex asked me.

“Not a good idea. Nathan asked me to keep my eyes on things. They'll be leaving soon for the honeymoon. The plane is ready,” I informed her.

“We should get a meal though?”

“Mom made me eat,” she said rolling her eyes.

“She loves you,” I told her softly.

“I’ve never doubted that, but she’s being a pest about the engagement. She wants us hitched pronto,” she said, sounding disgusted.

“Well I’ve got a lovable personality, so it’s no surprise really,” I said shrugging innocently.
