“It’s understandable. My mom did declare us engaged,” I said pulling her closer to me.

“We should just get married right now and shock them silly,” she said.

“It’s a good plan,” I told her. “Except you’d never agree to it if I asked you. You do look bride-level beautiful though,” I said to her, grazing her lips with mine.

“And you are groom-level handsome,” she said shyly.

“Your mom's coming this way,” I told her, spying on Mrs. Grey.

“Oh shit, hurry. I don't want to talk to her now,” she said, grabbing my arm and practically running.

“She’s not stopping,” I told her. Her mom had caught up to us before we could exit the tent. Valerie's table was nearby.

“Valerie," I said, "did I mention that you look amazing?” “Well, thank you. Yes, you did,” she said smiling.

"Mrs. Grey," I said, nodding at Alex's mother, who had reached the table.

"Hey mom,” Alex said

“Hey yourself. Don’t think I haven’t noticed that you’ve been avoiding me, young lady,” she chided, her voice unhappy.

“Now why would I want to do that?” Alex asked, looking at me when she said it, flashing her eyes.

“Well why won’t you pick up my calls?” her mother asked, her brows raised triumphantly like she’d hit some kind of nail on the head with just that one sentence.

“I’ve been busy Mom,” Alex replied.

“No, you haven't. That excuse doesn’t fly anymore,” her mother replied, looking steadily unhappier.

“Fine, I’ll call you after the wedding. I promise," she said. "You look beautiful by the way.”

“Don’t butter me up young lady,” Mrs. Grey replied, but she was smiling now.

“Where’s dad? I haven’t seen him all day” Alex asked her.

“He’s over at the bar with Mr. Smith” she answered. “They’re talking business as usual. I swear that man lives for nothing else,” she grumbled.

“He lives for you. Business is a secondary consideration,” Alex told her with a sly wink.

She smiled before shaking a finger at her.

“I should go say hello to him,” Alex said. She graced me with a little peck on each cheek before sauntering off with her mom. I watched her go, unable to tear my eyes away. She really did sparkle in her dress.

“You look like you wouldn’t mind getting her back on the dance floor,” Valerie said, fanning herself dramatically.

“I do?” I asked, no need to egg her on really. Valerie would tease me the whole event if I encouraged her even a little.

“I go away for one moment and then I hear my two favorite people got engaged in my absence” Val continued.

“It was sudden,” I said.

“Talk about sudden. Y’all have been together for what? Three weeks?” she asked.

“Love is mysterious in its ways,” I said mysteriously.

We were both giddy and for some reason, my comment set us off on a prolonged laughing fit, with Val holding her stomach and snorting whenever she peeked up at me.

“Corny stuff, Christian, real corny,” she said, wiping her eyes.
