“Home? You’re coming over?” he asked.

“Don’t you just wish,” I said giggling? I skipped ahead to the other door and slipped into the car. As soon as he'd gotten in and closed his door, I leaned over and fastened my lips to his. I’d been waiting all evening to do that.

He pulled me close and deepened the kiss. His lips were strong and heavy against mine. I pulled back slightly and looked at him.

“You deserved that. Thanks a lot,” I said softly in his ears.

He laughed mildly and started the car and we drove into the night. The evening had been perfect. Things could only get better.

Chapter Five

Alex's POV

I stood at the entrance of the event center, taking in the grandeur of the place. The walls were adorned with golden curtains, and the floor was covered in a plush red carpet. The chandeliers above my head twinkled, casting a warm glow over the room. The place was abuzz with people, all dressed in their finest attire, laughing and talking as they celebrated Sophie’s and Nathan’s engagement.

Grace and confidence were no strangers to me as I walked into the room. I'd paid a pretty penny for the knee-length, black sheath dress I was wearing tonight, and I intended to show it off. It hugged my curves in all the right places. The dress had been cut with a simple, jewel neckline that framed my face perfectly. My arms were bare, and my wrists were adorned with delicate gold bracelets and a watch. The dress had a fitted silhouette, but a small slit at the back allowed me to move with ease.

The black stiletto heels elongate my legs, giving me an extra boost of confidence. My hair was styled in loose waves that cascaded down my shoulders, and soft, effortless curls framing my face. I had decided on minimal makeup—a subtle smoky eye and a natural lip color that enhanced my beauty without overpowering my features.

Beside me, Christian looked dashing in his a fitted black tuxedo. It accentuating his leanness and his broad shoulders and his height. The jacket was sleek and stylish, with peaked lapels that made him look even more classic and timeless than usual. A crisp white shirt and black bow tie completed the look.

However good he looked, I couldn't bring myself to enjoy his company. We'd been fighting on the way to the party, and I could still feel the sting of his harsh words.

Christian looked at me expectantly, waiting for me to make the first move. But I stood my ground, not wanting to be the one to back down.

As we made our way, I scanned the crowd, looking for a familiar face. I spotted Valerie by the banquet that was set up for guests and made my way over to her, leaving Christian to fend for himself.

Valerie greeted me with a hug, pulling me to the dancefloor. I allowed myself to be swept away by the music, putting the tension between me and Christian on hold for the moment.

Soon, Sophie and Nathan arrived. They were both dressed to the nines, the epitomes of elegance, and my heart swelled with happiness for them as I watched them approach. Sophie looked beautiful, beyond stunning really.

Her floor-length gown was a shade of deep blue that complemented her dark hair perfectly. Her hair was swept up in an intricate bun, with a few loose strands framing her face. The simple diamond earrings she wore glinted in the light, and her makeup was understated yet flawless.

Nathan's sharp, tailored suit was a deep shade of navy blue that complemented Sophie’s dress. His hair was styled to perfection, and the simple black tie added a touch of sophistication to his look. An expression of pure happiness lit his face, and I couldn't help but envy the way he looked at his fiancée.

As they made their way closer, I could see that Sophie's eyes were bright and shining, her smile wide and infectious. She clung to Nathan’s arm, and they both looked so in love and happy that it was almost painful to watch.

As they reached the entrance of the ballroom, the band started up a song for them, and they were greeted by applause and cheers from the guests. They both beamed, taking their place at their table, surrounded by their friends and family.

I waved at Sophie and made my way over to her with Valerie.

“You look absolutely beautiful, Sophie,” I said, leaning in for a little hug.

“Jane outdid herself,” Sophie replied laughing. Jane was Sophie’s go to makeup person. For Sophie, every special event was marked with a visit to Jane, and she always delivered perfection.

“Well you look gorgeous! Congratulations,” Valerie told her smiling.

“Nothing for me ladies?” Nathan said with a hurt look on his face.

“You’ve been outshone. You should’ve made more effort,” I told him laughing out loud.

The song changed, and we all made our way to the dance floor.

“Where’s Christian?” asked Nathan, and as I didn’t actually have the answer to the question at that moment, so I slipped away, pretending I hadn’t heard him.

Christian still had not made his way back to me since I abandoned him when we arrived. I wasn’t going to pay him much attention. Let him sulk. But as the night wore on, he made sure I noticed him dancing with various beautiful girls, and he kept his eyes locked on mine the whole time. He was obviously trying to make me jealous, and I don’t know why, but he seemed to be doing a fine job of it.

Feeling annoyed, I pulled away from Valerie and strode over to him.
