Chapter Twenty-Six

No signature. Nothing else, front or back. Not even a single thread that my tracking magic could follow. Whoever had given me this note did so expertly. “Is this some kind of a joke?”

Razai leaned over and read the threat. His hair tickled my ear. “Ah… it seems like you’ve been found out. Can’t pretend you’re not an amateur now.”

Fury exploded through my fear. “You’re the one who hired me! And get out of my space.” The back of my hand struck his middle. Not that it hurt him, with his tight abs bouncing me back like it was nothing.

He only turned his head in bemusement, not retreating even an inch. “What are you so angry about? I thought you’d enjoy this?”

“Why would I? I needed to be undercover.”

He leaned on the table, taking up more of my space as he thought. This fucker… “It’s not in the contract.”

“What?”

“Undercover-ness,” he clarified. “It’s not stipulated that you have to be undercover. We’ll protect your identity and hide who you are as much as possible, but the deal isn’t off if anyone finds out.”

My elbow dug into his bicep as I tried to push him away. “That doesn’t make me feel better.”

He moved his arm, and suddenly I was pushing into nothing. I would have fallen out of my chair and smacked my face into the linoleum if Razai hadn’t caught my shoulders and eased me back into the chair.

He frowned, concern making him scan my body for injuries. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Like what?” I said stiffly, only focusing on his grip nearly encircling each bicep.

“Like I’m a snake about to bite you or something.”

I rambled, “Bad example. I like snakes. Joke’s on you.”

His slate brows rose. “You didn’t mention you’re a comedian.”

“Small-time. Underground type stuff. You’re touching me. Again,” I emphasized.

He released me like he’d been stung. “Sorry.” Shaking his head, he added, “I really am. I mean, I did save you from crashing into the floor, but I’m having trouble remembering not to… it almost reminds me of…”

His broad chest stilled with held breath. Green eyes glittered like gemstones swimming with intrigue. “Never mind.”

What the hell was that? He doesn’t usually get upset when I tell him to back off. “Never mind, my ass,” I mumbled. The note lay between us, face up. “Do you know who put it in?”

“Obviously not.”

“It could be Clave. He did send this to me,” I reasoned.

Razai sighed. “Clave left that in my teacher’s mailbox yesterday. It’s been sitting there for a dozen hours. Plus, wouldn’t that be a little suspicious if the killer left an anonymous note, without handwriting, clearly trying to hide their identity, inside a folder from themselves? You can do better than that.”

I could, but every option had to be considered. My brain cycled and buzzed, taking in this new event with hunger.

Razai lowered himself to his knees and leaned on the desk. His large hand inched across the table. “Can I try something?” he asked.

Without waiting for an answer, he threaded his fingers into mine, engulfing it in heat and insistence. Lust snapped through me like dynamite. Intense and destructive.

Fuck.

I nearly jerked away…

But I didn’t.

“You feel it too, don’t you?” he murmured. My knuckles were less than an inch from his lips. “Convince me you don’t.” His other hand slid up my forearm.
