Razai pushed past her, bumping her aside. “I’m getting very sick of that term. I’m not a stalker, I’m a dedicated professional.”

I finished, “Who stalks people he wants to hire.”

Ember’s mouth formed an oh. “He scoped you out, didn’t he?”

He studied her as if just noticing her for the first time. “Do I know you? You must be a first-year student if I don’t know you.”

“Who are you?” she demanded.

“Razai, of course. Here with my wife Betty.”

Ember yanked out a school schedule from her pocket and studied it. “I have you in a half hour.”

Razai whistled low and long. “Tough luck to you. Betty’s been soaking wet all day. You’re not going to like her very much, but by the end of tonight, the two of you will be very well-acquainted.”

Ember took a step back, disturbed. “I thought this was physical combat training.”

It took everything in me not to laugh. I kept the straightest, most serious face possible when I said, “Oh, it is. Betty’s a beast in more ways than one.”

She swallowed hard. “I’m still going to attend. For class credit. And so I can gather evidence to share with the police.” Her body shuddered as she left.

Razai slammed the door shut and cracked up. Bent over, hands on his knees and shoulders shaking, he wheezed, “See? We are a good team.”

“I saw an opportunity, and I took it. Only an idiot would pass that up.”

He raked back his moonstone hair. “Never would have expected such filthy thoughts from you, but then again, I do remember the closet.”

I will not blush. I won’t.

“Funny. I don’t remember at all.”

“You should be a better liar, Detective.”

Keep it together, Gray. “What? My brain only hangs onto important information.”

The bastard’s sly grin stretched wider, knowing and mocking all at once. His eyes drifted from my cheeks to my lips, then down my neck. Tension crackled in the air as the mood switched from playful to something darker. Something more dangerous and heated. “That’s a nice color on your skin.”

Damn. Why did his voice have to drop like that?

Fully not breathing anymore and completely embarrassed, I did what I did best.

Compensated through violence.

Through gritted teeth, I ordered, “Unless you have something useful to say, get out before I call Quinn’s throwing arm over here.”

He gazed at me through thick lashes. Then his smile snapped back into place and the tension snapped like a whip—“Here,” Razai said, dropping a folder onto my table. “This is the last of the files that Clave has for you. Enjoy. Oh, and make sure to keep this Friday night open.”

“Why?” I pulled the contents out. Looked like they were more school reports and transcripts. Great. Like I needed any more of these. A small, folded piece of paper fluttered to the ground.

“Because we’re meeting with Redford and his friends! But there’s a catch.”

“Of course there is.” I bent down and snatched the fallen paper.

“We’re going to a club, and I’m the only one allowed to meet with them. Gray… Gray? What’s wrong?”

My fingers shook as I read the typed note. Shook with what, though? Fear? Excitement?

Watch your back if you want to make it out alive. But let’s be honest. This won’t end well for you.
