Razai kicked his feet up on the table, smirking. “Sit down, Gray.”

“Fuck you.”

“Manners,” he chided.

“Manners?” Steam could have been blowing out my nose, I was so angry. Moving around Azra so that this time my body protected hers, I shot back, “Manners would have been nice before you lied to me. Before you k—”

He lifted his chin, one cocked brow egging me on.

Revealing what he’d done in front of Azra put her in more danger. Maybe if he knew Azra’s ignorance, he’d leave her alone.

“Before you kissed me,” I corrected carefully.

“Good save.” He bit his lip, fighting a laugh.

“No, it was—”

“And here I figured you were more angry about the fact that I murdered Benjamin Castile. You may want to reexamine your priorities, Gray.”

The room bristled with Azra’s anger. It practically skated across my skin. In a low, deadly tone, she demanded, “He what?”

I sighed. “Azra, I think I’m going to need some caffeine. This is going to be a long, long night.”

Chapter Sixty-Three

I gulped down the cup of Azra-made coffee. Across from me, Razai typed away on his phone, whistling a merry tune.

Azra knew one secret now. Razai could still decide that Azra knew too much and eliminate her for real. But I held out hope. Maybe, if I cooperated, he’d spare her.

Maybe. I had to take that chance.

She still didn’t know that Razai was a demon, or that he’d used her image to fake her capture, or that he knew about my being half-demon, or that he’d glimpsed the extent of my true power.

She’s going to be spitting mad.

But I was still confused. Why was I still breathing and not strung up on the university building? Why all the mind-fuckery and tricks? And why were we sitting here like brunch ladies about to gossip about church?

Well, not me. Or Clave, or Azra. Razai was the only one oozing such infuriating nonchalance. And, as I knew, he tended to take up the whole room.

I set the cup down and crossed my arms. “Explain. Start from the beginning of this whole disaster. Tell me why you killed Benjamin and why you hired me to track you down.”

A low, feline growl came from behind. The noise vibrated through my chair, vicious and deep.

She’s real mad.

“Actually, I’ll start a little earlier,” Razai replied, completely ignoring Azra. “I won’t pretend like my story isn’t at the center of this, so I’ll be very direct with you, Gray.”

“Love new experiences.”

“Really? I remember being very, very direct with you several times,” he said with a hooded stare.

“Sorry. Can’t recall.”

“I’d be happy to remind you.”

The flutter of heat in my stomach only made me sick. Clearly, my pussy was slow on the uptake. Murderers didn’t make us wet. “Fuck yourself with a cactus, you lying shit.”

“Children,” Azra growled. The distinct sound of cracking wood and exasperated curses that followed told me she’d forgotten about her Anger Claws while gripping the counter and had likely ruined the wood.
