I like the way she says my name, and I don’t miss the way she takes me in. Her eyes search my face, slide down my neck to my tatted arms. I wonder what she’s thinking as her eyes go back to my beard. I notice her cheeks turn red.

She must be having the same thoughts as me.Fuck, she’s adorable.

Her attention goes back to the dead man on the ground. “So, what do we do about him? There are too many bullets to be considered defense of another person.”

I wave a hand halfheartedly. “I have…” I trail off. I have to choose my words carefully. I don’t know if she’s figured out Ezra sent me to find her. “I havefriendswho will handle this.”

Her throat moves as she gulps, eyes wide with fear. She’s probably wondering what in the hell she’s just gotten herself into. Perfect.

“I’ll need you to keep this between us, though, yeah? There’s no need to involve anyone else in this little mishap. It would just complicate things.”

Her eyes get wider, if that’s even possible, and her chest rises and falls rapidly. I don’t want her to think I’m going to hurt her, but she should fear me. She should be very afraid of all the things I can do to her if she doesn’t comply.

“Maya?”

She blinks, startled, then takes a step back. “J-Jasmine,” she stammers.

“What?”

“My name is Jasmine,” she says quietly.

I bite my lip, amused. “My apologies, darlin’.”

“Do I know you?”

I take a step forward, my hard gaze never leaving hers.

Ezra won’t mind if I just take a taste, right? Just one touch, one kiss…

She’d probably even like it. She’d probably open herself up to me and let me fuck her the way I want to.

“Stop,” she whispers, fear in her eyes. I didn’t realize I’ve been eating up her steps with my own until she’s backed against the side of my truck.

“Can I take you somewhere?” I know where she works, but if she gets in my truck right now, I most definitely willnotbe returning her there.

Easy, I tell myself. You don’t want to scare her away.

That would ruin everything.

She frantically shakes her head. “No. The run back to work will ease my nerves. But thank you, though.”

I nod, letting my eyes travel up and down her body one last time.

“Well, it was nice meeting you, Maya Johnson.” I grin wickedly as I step around her and hop into my truck. With a wink, I take off.

CHAPTERFOUR

MAYA

I race back to work, nearly getting myself hit by a sixteen-wheeler in my haste to find safety.

Who thehellwas that guy? And how did he know my name? Had I mentioned it when I introduced myself?

I wrack my brain for the answer, going through every single detail of our encounter.

I don’t remember mentioning it.

I know for a fact I didn’t.
