“But not because he alone wants to keep you,” I say quietly.

I don’t know why the hell I say that, but it’s true. I don’t want to imagine what this house will be like if she were to leave again. I’ve only known her a few hours, and she’s already managed to shake everything up.

We stare at each other, the tension between us palpable. My cock is damn near straining at my pants.

She pats the space next to her on the bed. “Come here.”

I step back, shaking my head, hands raised in surrender. “No buena, chica. Benji’s not too far, and I already had to lie to get in here. If he catches me in here with you, he’ll call Ezra.”

She bites her lip, then smirks. “And?”

“And… I’m not really in the mood to die today,” I say, chuckling.

She nods, but her tone is provoking when she says, “I didn’t peg you for a coward.”

I bristle. “I’m not.”

“Prove it.” Her eyes have a hint of mischief in them. I drag my bottom lip between my teeth as I slowly make my way over. I feel like I’m doing something illegal, but isn’t that what I do, anyway? Every single thing I do is against some kind of law, known or otherwise, yet I do it without a second thought.

But what I’m doing here with Maya?

Ezra would definitely have my head on a platter if he found out.

Regardless, I lie down next to her on the bed, barely leaving any space between the two of us.

We’re silent for a while. The only sound comes from beyond the window; the faint sounds of birds chirping outside and the breeze whispering through the trees. I long to be outside in the fresh air, in my sanctuary, away from this mansion.

I want to take Maya there soon, when Ezra’s not around to tell me not to.

“How did you and Ezra meet?” Maya asks quietly, breaking the silence. When I turn to her, she’s already looking at me with curiosity.

I take a deep breath. “We met about a year ago in Colombia. He was there to finalize his plans with the Salinas Cartel—mycartel. His syndicate would have our guns shipped from overseas, and we’d compensate him with the drugs he needs to supply his dealers.”

“Ezra does drugs?” she whispers.

“He doesn’t do drugs—he has dealers on the streets who sell them for him.”

Maya shakes her head and chews on her bottom lip. “How did you end up here?”

“I left home. The pressure of being a leader was too much for me to bear. My papá knew for years that it wasn’t what I wanted, but it was what I was destined to do since birth. When he died, I had no other choice but to step up.”

“How did he die?” she asks quietly. She’s lying on her side now, looking at me with those big brown eyes, her head resting on her arm.

“He was shot in the head.” I let out a breath. “It happened just five weeks ago, right in front of me. A month before his death, he knew he was going to die; he just didn’t know when. He thought it would be because of his worsening health… I don’t think he considered he’d ever be murdered, despite the dangerous life he lived.”

“I’m so sorry.” She puts her hand on my chest, right over my heart. I place mine on top of hers, rubbing my thumb along her knuckles.

“Thank you. He’d made a lot of enemies growing up in that life. He came from a long line of criminals, and he raised me to be just like him, despite my mother’s wishes.” I chuckle, thinking of my beautiful mother.

“Tell me about her.”

I glance over at Maya, her eyes imploring, but I’m not ready to share that with her just yet.

“Maybe another time, mi amor.”

She nods, understanding.

“Tell me about you. What was your life like before you met Ezra?”
