“But Angel hadn’t come back yet. I got worried and decided to go find her. I saw another body in the hallway and when I looked up, that’s when I saw him,” she points to the body on the ground.

I let out a sigh, hearing this is almost as bad as reliving it. I can feel the anxiety building in my chest, and his hands around my throat.

“He had Angel pinned against the wall by her neck. She was turning blue and struggling to breathe. I didn’t know what to do or how to help. I knew I couldn’t overpower him, she was seconds away from passing out.” She stops to take another breath before continuing.

“That’s when I saw the gun laying on the floor, and you know the rest.” Cassie goes back to staring at the body on the ground.

Maybe it’s hitting her differently than it is me, but we did what had to be done. I feel no guilt or remorse for what took place. It was us or them.

“You did good, Cass. We’d both be dead right now if you didn’t take that shot. Don’t give that creep another ounce of your energy. He doesn’t deserve it. You hear me?” She nods, accepting my words, but I can still see the wheels turning in her brain.

She’s still processing.

She looks up at me with confusion in her eyes. “Me? What about you? When did you become this complete badass, Angel?”

I shake my head. “I’m not. I did what needed to be done to keep us safe. The same way you did.” My eyes drop to the body lying in the space between us.

Cassie shakes her head, shying away. Seeing her feel guilty over this has my anger boiling to the surface.

“Cassie, look at me!” I yell. “I’d be dead right now if it wasn’t for you. Seriously! Stop beating yourself up over shooting this fucking dirtbag.” My foot sweeps out kicking the piece of shit lying on the ground.

“She’s right, Cassie. These guys would have taken you both out without blinking an eye. So just let it go,” Dante demands, his voice is harsh. He turns away from her as he starts to pace. I watch as he rings out his fists. There’s anger in his eyes, he looks like he’s ready to stab someone.

“Let it go? I’m sorry, I don’t go around killing people every day like the rest of you! So give me a fucking minute to adjust,” she yells jumping out of her chair, storming toward the door.

Dante’s shoulders sag, and his chest deflates in defeat. “Fuck,” he yells rushing over to her, limping. What the fuck.

I was so caught up with everything happening here it didn’t register before now. My gaze sweeps over Jax and Dante.

They are both covered in blood. Jax looks like he did a shit job trying to wipe it off. But I raise my hand, gripping his chin and turning his head to get a better look.

Sure enough, there are specks of blood on his neck. I arch a brow at him, and he just shrugs.

“I didn’t mean it like that, Cass. I’m sorry. It’s just—” his voice fades away. I watch as he looks at Jax while searching for the right words. Dante’s brows turn in as he runs his hand over his face.

“We just have bigger things to worry about right now,” Jax says, snatching my hands from his face. His smokey eyes bore into me as a nervous shiver runs down my spine.

“Where’s Royal and Lucky?” I ask, my voice dripping with concern.

Cassie and I look at one another. My anger quickly vanishes and is replaced with worry. Sweat trickles my forehead as I wait for an answer.

Cassie stops, turning back to face us, and I watch as the fight leaves her body.

“Where’s my brother?” She sighs, closing her eyes in fear of the answer. “Where the fuck. Is. Lucky?” she yells in frustration.

My fists twist around in Jax’s shirt, pulling him to me.

Jax chews on the inside of his cheek, brushing his fingers along my jaw.

“Royal and Lucky are hurt. We need to get out of here and get back to them,” Jax says.

The air is stolen from my lungs as my knees buckle. Jax catches me as I start to go down.

“Why are you just now saying something?” I mumble through the dizziness. “One of you speak!” I shout.

A wave of nausea rocks me to my core and I run to the kitchen sink, bent over, dry heaving but nothing comes up. My stomach is as empty as my heart feels right now.

I can hear Cassie yelling so I spin on ky heels and head back to the front room.
