Chapter Seven

HARPER

Iviewed Treoid 5 inthe rear camera as I flew the escape pod from its orbit. The dwarf planet grew smaller in the distance while the dark starry void that was outer space opened before us.

"If a meteor hits that planet, it’ll be doing it a favor," Varus grumbled beside me in the passenger seat.

The side of his wing brushed against my seat. "There’s room in the back in case you want to stretch."

"Are you saying you don’t want me sitting this close to you?"

"No, that’s not what I’m saying at all." I saw the amusement on his face. "You’re having fun with me again."

"This is not my idea of fun." He checked out the view from the passenger window. "But we made it into orbit, thanks to your flying skills."

"Don’t thank me just yet." I checked the cabin pressure from the monitor on screen. "All I hear is static on the pod’s com link. I can’t reach the Wanderstar Fleet or any space hub for the moment."

"Did you set our course for Racopia? It’s the nearest planet."

I read the coordinates on the navigation grid that Varus provided. "I set it, but based on the log, there’s no space hub on your planet."

The blue lines of the grid cast a neon glow on his face. "Racopia is not positioned to receive outsiders. When I was on the throne, I worked to change that."

"Oh?"

"Not so the Wanderstar Fleet can meddle." He quickly made it clear to me so I wouldn’t get my hopes up again about the allyship. "So that we’d be able to defend and help others against the Quareks."

"You do realize you and the Fleet have the exact same goal?"

His face was set like stone. "I have other things to take care of once I get home."

"You are one tough cookie."

"What is a cookie?"

"Food. We eat it for a snack or dessert on Earth."

"You’re calling me a snack?"

"No, that’s a completely different term."

"You just said a cookie is a snack. So you are calling me a snack."
