"The timing wasn’t right for us on Earth. We bonded in another place, here."

He stroked my hair while we lay there for another few minutes. Then the rain forced us to get up and go inside.

We picked up our clothes scattered throughout the house and then showered. Klinn was gentle as he helped me wash my back and get the grass stains off my knees. We got dressed and pulled ourselves together in some fashion before he retrieved the money he placed in the house for safekeeping. “Time to spend this on fuel and food.”

“And a dress. I’m going to need something to make it look like I’m a regular at the opera when I go buy a ticket tonight.”

He nodded, already returning to our unfinished business. "I could stay with you all day and night. Many days and many nights.”

“Klinn.”

“You don’t have to say anything. We better move before we miss the opera. I’ll drive.”

As his heartfelt words lingered in the air, hopefulness and uncertainty formed a battle on the inside of me. I had to put it aside, along with our time at the house, to set off for the city. I got in the hovercar, and we drove. I glanced in the back window, not knowing if I'd ever come this way again.

Chapter Twelve

KLINN

Istood outside theopera house in Kajal, my eyes scanning the elegant facade as the rich patrons flowed in and out. The opulence of the building made me feel out of place, like a shadow amidst the grandeur.

Faye, on the other hand, seemed to effortlessly blend in, dressed in a stunning gown that accentuated her beauty. I watched her adjust her outfit as she stood next to me, looking beautiful and mysterious. It was hard not to be distracted by her presence, her allure growing stronger with each passing moment.

My laughter was light as I tried to bring back my focus. "I have a feeling I'll stand out too much in there since I'm not dressed for the occasion. I'll keep watch from out here, in case any suspicious characters come around."

She gave me a smile, her eyes filled with amusement and something else, something I couldn't quite decipher. "You're going to let me do all the work while you play the role of the charming distraction? I see how it is."

She had no idea how charming she was to me. It took effort for me to leave the memories of just a few hours ago behind, when she was in my house, and we were lost in each other. What I wouldn’t give to stay in the past moment, replay it again and again.

Damn. I had it bad. A mate will do that.

"It’s time to be serious." Her smile faded, and she placed a gentle hand on my arm. "Klinn, please be careful out here. I don't want anything to happen to you."

I waved her concerns off, trying to sound nonchalant. "Don't worry about me. I've been in tight spots before. Besides, finding Riven and clearing my name is our priority."

Was it, though? Was it really the only thing I wanted? I could have a clean slate and that would be it. Just a clean slate. Free of everything I cared about. Free of Faye.
