Summer did the same and slid into her dress as Cody grabbed sweats and a T-shirt behind her. “I’ll go to my room and put on something warmer.”

“No, sweetheart, stay here. I’ve got this.”

“Someone needs to drive her car back here.”

“I’ll drive her back later in the morning to get it.”

“I’m up. I’m going with you.” Summer left his room, went to hers, and put on a pair of comfy leggings and a soft sweater to keep her warm, along with socks and shoes, then went to the kitchen, found a plastic bowl, and met Cody as he came down the stairs.

“What’s that for?”

“In case she gets sick in the car.”

Cody winced. “Good thinking.”

“We’ll take my car, then you can drive hers home.”

Cody nodded, then stepped close and kissed her on the forehead. “Thanks for coming with me.”

“She’s my sister.”

“Yeah. But she called me.”

“Has she done this before?”

They left the house and got into her car.

“Not because she was drunk. A couple times when she went somewhere with friends and got stuck because she wanted to come home earlier than them. And a couple times when her friends were intoxicated or whatever and she didn’t want to get in the car with them. Which resulted in me getting all of them home safely.”

“She’s lucky to have you.”

“I’m easier than calling her parents.”

They found Natalie and a couple of friends leaning against her car outside a home that had a long driveway filled with other cars.

Summer stopped the car and Cody got out, leaving his door open.

“What’s she doing here? Were you two together when I called?” Natalie slurred her words and looked disgruntled.

Summer dismissed it.

Cody gently took her by the arm. “We’re here to take you home. Give me your keys.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m driving your car home.”

“I’ll go with you.”

“I think it’s best you go with your sister. I’ll drive your friends home.”

The friends were already stumbling to get into the back seat of Natalie’s car.

“I’m coming with you.”

“There’s not enough room for you and your friends. Get in Summer’s car.” Cody nudged her toward the open door.

“You’re being so bossy.”
