Cody grinned. “We can make this work.”

“I’m also going to hire a personal assistant to free up some of our time.”

He raised a brow. “Our?”

“You know, to take care of things for us, so we have more time together.”

Cody nodded. “Actually, I like that idea. Especially if we’re going to be traveling back and forth between states.” Cody kissed her softly. “I’ve had ideas circling my head about how this will look for us.”

“But you didn’t want to bring it up, and I didn’t say anything, either, because we wanted to stay in our bubble where this is our life.”

“The truth... I was afraid you’d ask me to come to Texas with you and I wasn’t ready to give you an answer.”

“Because your life is here and you don’t want to give it up. I’d never ask you to do that.”

“You’re going to run Sutherland Industries one day. I can be a lawyer anywhere. Even at your company.”

“But that’s notyourcompany. That’s not the legacy you’re carrying on from your father. I understand that sentiment and how important it is to have that connection and history and want to build on it.”

“I know you do, it’s just... I didn’t expect this.”

“What?”

“Us.”

“And?”

“I don’t want to lose you to time and distance or anything else.”

“Then we won’t let it happen.”

Cody kissed her like a promise and prayer, pouring all of his emotion into it, letting her know how much he wanted to hold on to her.

She felt the same way and kissed him back with all her desire to love him and be loved by him, to show him the connection was real and vibrant and not going anywhere.

And just like every night of the past week, they ended up stripping away their clothes from each other, laying their hearts bare, and falling into bed, locked in an intimate embrace, making love. Every touch, sigh, moan, and whispered endearment was a sign of how much they needed and wanted each other. And when the passion overflowed and they lay in each other’s arms in the dark and quiet of the night, they slept, content to be close and loved and connected, not alone, but as one.

Summer had never known such bliss. She wanted to feel like this every day for the rest of her life.

She understood why her mother chased this feeling, this bond. Summer didn’t think about losing it, she thought about how to hold on to it. It wouldn’t be easy, the life they were building together, but it would be so worth it to be this happy wrapped up in Cody’s love.

All they had to do was figure out the logistics, because in hermind, the love was real and binding, and more important than where she did her work was whom she was with.

Summer lifted her head from Cody’s chest, her mind not wholly online. She heard the noise, but couldn’t quite place it until Cody’s phone lit up again with the trilling ringtone. She made a grab for it on the bedside table just as Cody’s eyes popped open.

She handed him the phone. “It’s yours.”

Cody grumbled and tapped the screen. “Hello,” he said groggily. “Nat, is that you?”

Summer sat up and brushed her hair back over her shoulder.

Cody put his hand on her leg. “Yeah. I’ll come get you right now. Stay put. Drop me a pin so I have the address.” Cody’s phone pinged with the location he needed. “Do not get in your car. I’ll be there in like ten minutes.” Cody hung up, dropped the phone on his chest, and rubbed both hands over his face.

Summer glanced at the clock next to the bed. Three forty-seven. “She should have been home by two.”

“She’s drunk.” Cody threw off the covers and rolled out of bed.
