“Brother, I am so…” I shake my head and turn toward my room. I’ve lost the only woman that means the world to me, and I couldn’t do anything about it.

The telltale signal that someone is trying to video chat with me pings through my room. I flip open my laptop and hit connect.

“Max Sutcliffe, what the hell are you doing in New York and my daughter back in Canada?” Mae’s mom states, as an older gentleman walks behind her, places his hand on her shoulder and smiles.

“I screwed up.” I say, watching her face soften.

“No Max. You brought her to your family and failed to mention what she means to you. She failed to let her balls she carries on her chest drop and stand her ground. You and your family need to show her where she belongs.” She says, laughing at something off camera then ending the video.

I sit on my bed and thought about what I could do to make this right. I need Mae in my life, and I need my family to fully accept Mae as that woman.

Slapping the bed, I stand up and walk to Viking’s office, knocking on the door and waiting for him to let me walk in.

“What!”

I walk in the room and sit. I take a few minutes to explain what I want to happen, hoping that he is on board with me.

Chapter Eighteen

Mae

A week after returning to my hometown, I am back in the strip club, but as a talent manager. When I had called to tell them about me being injured and not back for a few months, they offered me the position.

I have been in my office for two hours when Roland walks into the office with a smile on his face.

“What’s up?” I ask, placing my hand on the desk and pushing back.

He places down my old outfit, nods, then turns to walk out. “Roland, why is this on my desk?”

“You have been requested on stage. One more time,” he says, then leaves my office.

I stare at the outfit, and slowly put it on. Walking out of the room toward the back of the stage and waiting for my cue. I have no idea what song Roland picked.

“For the last time at club Curve, welcome to the stage, Ms. Irons. Dancing to When you’re in love with a beautiful woman by Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show.” The DJ announces, causing me to stumble a bit. I have never danced to this song before so I am going to wing it.

The lights go low, allowing me to walk on to the stage. I turn my back to the audience, push my casted leg out to the side, and grab a hold of the pole. I know that my routine will be on the pole and not much else.

The opening notes begin to play. As I close my eyes to get a feel of the music. I throw both arms in the air and allow the one closest to the pole to grip the steel beam. I spin to the front and I am blinded by the bright spotlight shining down on me. Someone changed the positioning of the lamp. They will need to fix that for tomorrow when the dancers are back on stage.

The chorus blasts through the speakers. I peel off the corset and throw it to the side. I lift my head to the roof. Dropping my free hand to my panties and tugging at the pull and allowing them to fall as the lights go out.

I am breathing heavy, there are a few applause but that’s it, I drop my head as the lights in the building go on and I am standing naked in front of Viking, Raci, Cappy, Jane, Prince, Muriel, Rough, Ryanne, Commando and another couple.

“If you can’t be naked in front of your family, who can you be naked in front of?” Cappy says, a smile spread across his face as he jumps on stage, pulls Jane up and wraps his arms around me. Jane offers me a t-shirt. I place it on, but say nothing to them.

“You are and will always be a part of my family. No matter how bad he fucks up, you will always have a place in our home.” Cappy places a kiss on my forehead and stands to the side with his arms wrapped around Jane.

The couple that I don’t know walk up on stage. “My name is Gray, and this is my wife, Tink. We haven’t had the pleasure of meeting you. I am Muriel and Ryanne’s dad. We didn’t get to meet you when you were up. We were on vacation. When Ryanne told me what happened, I lit into Roy. He wouldn’t stand for someone to do that to Ryanne. He should have had better manners with you. Welcome to the family sweetheart.” Gray places a kiss on my cheek, and his wife wraps her arms around me.

Viking and Raci come on stage, “Sweetheart, the moment you walked into my clubhouse, I knew you were going to be special. Not only to Commando, but to the club in general. Think of me and Raci as your auntie and uncle. We love you and welcome you into our family.” Viking wraps his arms around me and squeezes. He is making sure I know that he has my back. Raci snuggles in between us and squeezes me before she steps back, pushing Viking away. “Pushy little pixie.” He smiles and pulls her to the side.

“You are my sister. My ride or die. We are in this together.” Ryanne says, as Rough picks her up and places her on the stage, before he jumps up behind her. She wraps her arms around me and for the first time since the accident, I allow myself to hug someone.

“Thank you, Ryanne. For showing me that I wasn’t alone in a place that felt like I was on my own.” I look at Raci, then Jane and finally Muriel. “thank you all for giving friends that would have my back.” All the girls step forward, our pinkie fingers forming a square.

“Mae, I shouldn’t have said what I said to you. None of my brothers made Ryanne feel the way I made you feel. For that, I am truly sorry. I was ignorant in my own mind and I can’t apologize for hurting you the way I did. Thank you for standing up to me. For making me remember that I don’t know what others have been through, and to pass judgement based of a few seconds of meeting them is wrong.” He grabs my hands in his and pulls them to his chest. “Ms. Irons, you can spank me, but I am one hundred percent certain that your man would skin my hid.” He kisses my cheek and steps behind Ryanne.

I watch Commando make his way up to the stage, his eyes never leaving mine.
