“What did you say to her?” I ask, my voice low the rage building in my body.

“Boys shut the fuck up and listen.” Viking barks. We all turn to face him, the rage that is spreading through my body and the urge to lash out.

“Muriel said everything that Raci has told me in private. I have watched men fall in love with some of the strongest women I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Muriel fought through a domestic abuse situation and came out on top. Ryanne had a scumbag for a man cheat on her and try to rub it in her face, and she stood her ground. Jane, fuck Jane, had every single club whore gunning for her, and a man that was so afraid of commitment, he let her almost walk away. Raci, man Raci, watched her brother get gun down in broad daylight and she still stands here supporting me and this club. They all do, including Mae.” He walks to Rough and stands close, but speaks loud enough for all the men to hear.

“If any man in this room said what you said to Mae, to Ryanne, you would have pounded them to the ground. Mae was right. You know jack shit about her, because you refused to get to know her.” He spins, and he walks to Prince.

“You expect people to stay quiet around Muriel, yet what she just said here today is all her. She is one of the strongest woman I have ever met, and still you and the men here over look because of her situation. Her strength puts all you fucking pussies to shame.” He looks at Cappy, shakes his head and mumbles how he doesn’t understand how Jane could still be with him.

“Piece of advice Commando. You want to keep Mae as yours, stop letting every whore hang off you like you are god’s gift to them. Mae should be the only person who…” His speech is interrupted as Muriel runs back into the building.

“There’s been an accident. Ryanne and Muriel are pinned to the pole and they aren’t responding. The fire is on scene trying to extract them, but there are downed wires and making it hard for them to get to them.” She spins and runs out the door, followed by every man in the building.

We listen as the police officer tell the people in the waiting room what happened.

“The occupant of the other car was on her phone. She failed to make the turn and ran into the car the two ladies were in. She hit Miss. Ironside’s side and pushed the car pinning Miss. Jacks into her seat.” The officer says, then looks around the room.

There is a couple huddled in the corner, their eyes on the officer. “I’m sorry Mr. and Mrs. Jacobsen. Your daughter died on impact.” The woman sobs as she berries her head into her husband’s chest. His eyes have sorrow in them, but he is staying strong for his wife. No parent should have to put their child into the ground. Consequences of actions shouldn’t be death, but life has a way of making sure that you know life is short.

“The family of Mae Ironside?” A young female doctor asks, looking at her chart and flipping between pages.

“I am her uncle, and this is her fiancé.” Viking says, watching the doctor nod.

“She has a broken femur, and her left hip is shattered. We have fixed her femur, and she is on her way up now to have her hip rebuilt. She is awake, but hasn’t said a word to any of the nurses or doctors. I see that she is a Canadian citizen. Does anyone have her health card handy?” She says. I nod and reach into my back pocket to pull it out, handing it over to the doctor.

“Family of Ryanne Jacks?” An older doctor walks in, nods at the female doctor, then looks around the room.

Raci steps forward, with Rough at her side. They nod and the doctor speaks, “Miss. Jacks has a few broken ribs, a severe concussion, a dislocated shoulder and broken wrist. We have her under sedation to allow the brain to heal. You can go in two at a time. Fair warning, she is hooked up to make sure that her body is relaxed.” He spins and leaves, with Raci and Rough following behind him.

I take a seat and place my head in my hands. I was so oblivious to my surrounding that I failed to protect the woman that holds my heart. Screwing up has always been my back-up plan. It’s how I would get out of being with one woman. I don’t want to do that with Mae. She is mine to protect, mine to make sure she stayed safe. I failed.

A body sits beside me. “I didn’t mean for it to sound like she wasn’t wanted there. I meant for it to be taken as her to stand her ground. I screwed up with her and with Ryanne. And now they are in here. They are hurt. And it’s my fault.”

“You may have sent them running. But it was that driver that was too distracted to pay attention to the road. These drivers need to start paying attention to their surroundings and stop focusing on things that put other people at risk.” I say, nodding to Rough, but standing up and leaving the room. I need some air, and I need to clear my head.

Chapter Seventeen

Commando

Two Weeks Later…

“If you don’t stop babying me, I will cut off your balls and glue them to your forehead.” Ryanne growls at Rough.

“Baby, they said you had to take it easy.” He says, getting to his knees and grabbing her hands.

“You don’t get it. Yes, the doctor said I had to take it easy. But he also said that in order for me to get better, I had to slowly get back into my routine. I’m a nurse, for christ sakes, Roy.” She barks, slowly making her way to the bar and gingerly sitting on the stool.

I turn my head and look at Mae sitting in the corner. She has refused to talk to anyone but Ryanne, Muriel, Jane or Raci. She checked herself out of the hospital and had Jane put her in a hotel. Once I found out, I brought her back here. At first she wouldn’t leave my room, and she wouldn’t allow me into the room until she fell asleep.

Making my way to her, I kneel and lace my fingers between hers. Nothing I say has made her open up to me.

I feel a hand on my shoulder and look up into the sympathetic eyes of Rough. He nods, and that’s my clue to get up and leave him to try to break through to Mae.

He pulls up a chair and sits in front of her, leaning in. I watch his mouth move, and then I am shocked as Mae’s hand comes up and connects with his face. “I am not some dumb bitch who thinks you hang the moon. I am a real fucking person, with real fucking feelings. You won’t have to fucking worry about me much longer. The doctor gave me the go ahead, and I am flying home tonight. Fuck you. I hope karma takes a giant shit in your shoe.” She rolls forward, pushes open the door and rolls down the ramp to the uber that is sitting with the door open. She slowly stands and slides in, as the driver closes the door and walks around. He looks over the hood. He holds out his hand at an angle to his head, tucks his ring and middle finger down and moves his hand up and down.

“He is signing airplane.” Muriel states, before turning and walking away.

I knew she was set to head home. I watched her buy her ticket online. I knew she was leaving, and she was leaving not talking to me. I had screwed up by not making sure the brothers knew what she means to me.
