But I’d kept my weight on the other leg and quickly took advantage.

“Point!” the professor shouted with a hand in the air.

This time, it was a point for me.

We reset to our starting positions, my stance a little more confident than before.

Not that I really had a chance against Killian if he went all out. He could wield any blade as if it were an extension of his body.

But he didn’t always fight to win.

In this case, he was up to something. My guess was it was just to help me practice with the unfamiliar weapon and hone my skills.

But I sensed there was something else, too.

The match finally ended in a draw, our breaths coming out heavy as the sun beat down from above.

Killian smiled from across the field and bowed his head to signify the formal end to the match.

I returned the gesture with a courteous nod before stepping away from the circle.

One of the students took my foil and I was honestly glad to be rid of the flimsy thing, but I had enjoyed learning how to use it.

Killian paused with Professor Lumen, exchanging a quiet conversation.

Suspicious, I approached, eager to overhear what they were talking about.

Maybe making fun of my lack of skill?

Or had I made some sort of faux-pas with the weapon I wasn’t aware of?

“Thank you again, Professor,” Killian said in closing as he turned toward me with a relaxed smile.

I gave him a raised brow and perched my hands on my hips. “What was that about?”

Killian swooped his arm around my waist and tugged me close to him, dragging me with him.

“I have a confession to make?”

“Oh?” I asked, falling into stride with his longer legs.

He took us toward the edge of the courtyard and paused. “I asked the Dean for this assignment.”

“Because you like fencing?” I teased.

He grinned. “To distract you. I knew you’d never used a foil before.” He shrugged. “I just didn’t expect Professor Lumen to throw you in the ring with me like that.”

I laughed and threaded my arm through his. “I quite enjoyed being thrown in the ring with you,” I teased as I leaned into him. “Even if you did take it easy on me.”

He kissed the crown of my head. “I did at first, but not near the end. You’ve grown into a powerful warrior, Vivienne Reid.”

Blushing at his praise, I tucked my chin and cleared my throat. “So, Vern said he’d finally explain things at lunch?”

Killian sobered at the mention of Vern.

While this had been a nice distraction, the time to forget our responsibilities was over.

We had a Lost Queen to save.
