Why was everyone determined to sacrifice themselves for me?

A sudden wave of panic rushed through my system, reminding me that this wasn’t about me at all.

This was about the Lost Dragon Queens.

This was about her.

Turning, I allowed the magnetic pull to draw me into the shadows.

Be careful, little finch, I thought at my wyvern as I pictured my memories of us together. She had always been a part of my life even before she had hatched into her true form.

I loved her. She was the other half of my soul.

A sensation of love bounced back in return, responding double-fold that she felt the same.

Tears pricked my eyes as I shoved down the worry for those I cared about.

So many were risking themselves right now.

Vern and Jasmine.

Killian, his wyvern Topaz, and now Solstice.

Where did it end?

It ends when it’s finished, I thought to myself.

With a deep breath, I decided to trust those closest to me. To worry about them meant I didn’t believe in them, and wasn’t that an insult to their drive, to their character?

To their incredible strength?

I took a step further into the shadows where the Lost Dragon Queen waited for me.

Leaving behind the roars and mixture of blue with gold flames, I let darkness take me.

And didn’t look back.

CHAPTER 9

My fingers bled as I used a dagger to help myself climb the mountain.

It would have been so much easier to fly to the top with Solstice, but I was on my own now. So I powered onward, digging my free hand into the sticky substance of the ground while my other drove my blade through it so I could pull myself up again.

With each lurch my shoulder screamed in pain and my rib felt like it was breaking all over again.

Sweat broke out on my hairline and the chill up my spine turned to ice, concerning me that I was internally bleeding.

Or worse.

It was hard not to miss the golden specks flickering all over my skin.

Are they getting worse? I wondered.

They definitely were, which suggested my spirit was having difficulty staying attached to my body.

My bracelet pinched my wrist, sending new droplets of blood running down my arm to collect at my elbow.

Had I been working for anything other than a Lost Dragon Queen, I wouldn’t have had the strength to continue.
